Pullman girls sweep West Valley

Pullman rallied from a 14-10 third-game deficit to complete a 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 sweep of visiting West Valley as Great Northern League volleyball began Tuesday.

The teams were part of a three-way first-place tie with Colville last season. All were State 2A qualifiers and WV’s Eagles went on to place eighth.

Jordan Levenseller’s aces helped rally Pullman in the third game. Katie Guettinger had 23 assists for the victors.

Also in the GNL, Riverside swept visiting Cheney 25-22, 25-22, 25-17. Kate Hart, a 6-foot-2 sophomore middle blocker, had six kills, two aces and a block. … Deer Park defeated host Medical Lake 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18.

Inland Empire League : Unbeaten Coeur d’Alene (4-0) swept visiting Post Falls (0-3) 25-17, 25-21, 25-23. Hanna Johnson had 26 digs and Natalie Stewart 36 assists for CdA. … The Vikings remain ahead of Sandpoint (3-1), which swept visiting Lake City (2-2, 2-2). Wahlin Piper totaled 10 kills and Abby Helander added 15 digs for Sandpoint.

Intermountain League: St. Maries (3-0) took over undisputed first place with a 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 sweep of visiting Kellogg (2-1). Alyss Gerpge led St. Maries in kills and blocks. … Jamie Koch had 20 digs for Priest River (1-1) in a three-game win over visiting Timberlake (1-2).

Girls soccer

Great Northern League: Niina Al Hassan had three goals as league play began, leading Pullman (2-1) to a 3-0 victory at Cheney (1-2) in a match between teams that shared last year’s best regular-season GNL record. Al Hassan scored twice in the first 27 minutes of the match and completed her hat trick with 7 minutes remaining. … Kaley Way also had a hat trick and last year’s State 2A fourth-place finisher West Valley (3-0) opened the league season with a 4-1 victory over visiting Deer Park (0-2). Way scored 10 minutes into the match and put the game away with two second-half goals… Sisters Courtney, a senior, and Samantha Kelley, a freshman, each scored twice to fuel Medical Lake (3-0) to a 5-0 win over visiting Riverside (0-3).

Inland Empire League: Host Sandpoint (5-2-1, 3-0-1) and Lake City (4-1-3, 2-0-2) battled to a 1-1 standoff in their IEL match between league leaders. All of the scoring came in the first half. Vayley Hewitt tallied at the 7-minute mark and Hayley Spivey tied it 22 minutes later… Leading just 1-0 at halftime, Post Falls (1-7, 1-3) exploded for four goals in the second half for its first victory, 5-1 over visiting Lewiston (1-6, 0-5). PF previously had four one-goal losses. Renee Tatom put the Trojans ahead initially and added a second goal at the 65-minute mark to provide the winners with insurance.

Boys soccer

Inland Empire League: Tanner French’s unassisted goal broke a tie as visiting Sandpoint (8-1, 4-1) went on to a 3-1 victory and half-game lead over Lake City (3-3, 3-1). … In the other league match, last-place Post Falls and Lewiston tied 1-1.
