Scoop contest winners named

Scoop Reporter was spotted hiding among advertisements in last week’s Voices by the following six winners, who are this week’s Honorary Cub Reporters and are eligible to receive free ice cream.

Congratulations to:

Sarah McMaster, 11, who is homeschooled in the Chattaroy area and is the daughter of Jenny McMaster, found Scoop on page 13 of Thursday’s North Side Voice.

Nathan Quinn, 10, who is a student at Chester Elementary, spotted Scoop on page 8 of the Valley Voice. He is the son of Jeanne Quinn.

Jake Markham, 8, who is a student at Mullan Road Elementary and the son of Kristin Markham, found Scoop on page 10 of the South Voice.

Natalie Taylor, 4 1/2, who lives in Post Falls but doesn’t attend school yet, spotted Scoop on page 5 of the Prairie Voice. She is the daughter of Lloyd and Abby Taylor.

Nun to speak at NIC

The Venerable Thubten Chodron, an American nun in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, will speak about the prevalence of various media sources in today’s society and their effects on the mind during “Sex, Violence and Your Mind” from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the Molstead Library Todd Hall on the main campus at North Idaho College.

Ven. Chodron will explore ways to become more conscious about the images and information that enter the mind and the subtle and not-so-subtle results.

Ven. Chodron teaches Buddhist philosophy and meditation worldwide and has published numerous books on the topics. She has practiced this philosophy for approximately 30 years, since she was ordained as a nun in the Tibetan tradition in 1977. She has practiced under the guidance of the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan masters in both India and Nepal.

In a humorous style, Ven. Chodron teaches about Buddhist philosophy and meditation worldwide, including as a resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore and at Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle. In 2003, she founded Sravasti Abbey, a Buddhist monastic community in Newport, Wash.

The event is free and open to the public.

Actress to speak at Harding Center

Actress Lindsay Wagner will be at the Harding Family Center, 411 N. 15th St., No. 103 in Coeur d’Alene, on Friday, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m.

She will be bringing her “Quiet the Mind and Open the Heart” workshop, designed to help participants break through old or undesirable patterns affecting our family dynamics, intimate relationships, self-image, parenting, friendships and our work/career, along with accessing peace and joy naturally within.

Athol

Poker run planned for Saturday

Athol American Legion Post #149, 5525 E. Highway 54, will host a poker fundraiser on Saturday.

Bikers throughout North Idaho will travel from the legion in Athol to the Snake Pit in Enaville, then to the Sprag Pole Inn in Murray, then to Toby’s in Noxon, Mont., Camp’s Corner in Clark Fork, Slate’s in Ponderay and then back to the legion. There will be an alternate run for ATVs.

The run will begin at 10 a.m. and end about 5:30 p.m. A barbecue dinner will be held at the Athol Legion from 5 to 7 p.m.

Entry fee for Legion participants is $15. The fee includes dinner. Dinner for nonparticipant is $7.

The event will begin with breakfast at 9 a.m. for $5.

Proceeds will help fund a food convoy in the Veteran’s Home in Lewiston.

Blanchard

Dinner, auction scheduled

The Blanchard Community Center is having a Sportsman’s Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The dinner will include elk steaks, roasts, salads, and more.

Items in the silent auction include gift certificates, a hand-crafted knife by Mike Mann of Idaho Knife Works, lanterns, fishing poles and much more.

Cost for the event is $8 per person, $5 for ages 12 and younger.

Rathdrum

Fall Heritage time in Rathdrum

Rathdrum’s Fall Heritage Festival will be at Rathdrum’s City Park on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.

The event will include vendors and hands-on demonstrations. Dutch oven cooks will share their dishes and festival-goers can enjoy the sounds of live blue grass musicians.

Other demonstrations include spinning, knife sharpening, soap making and compass reading. Children’s activities include floating duck races.

Proceeds will benefit Rathdrum’s historic 1890 county jail located on Second Street. The Festival is sponsored by the Rathdrum/Westwood Historical Society and the City of Rathdrum.

Gary Eller, a historian and musician will be at the Rathdrum Fall Heritage Festival when it starts and at the Museum of North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene at 2 p.m.

He will also share his songs about the area throughout the week. He will be at the Staff House Museum in Kellogg on Sunday at 2 p.m.; the McConnell Mansion in Moscow at 7 p.m. on Wednesday; at Bonners Ferry Museum on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.; and on Sept. 28 he’ll be at the Bayview Community Center at 2 p.m.
