Zags outlast Idaho

Gonzaga University got 16 kills from Michelle Boevers and 53 assists from Denise Van de Mortel Wednesday night as the Bulldogs turned back Idaho 25-23, 13-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11 in a non-conference volleyball match at GU’s Martin Centre.

Van de Mortel also had 14 digs for GU (5-7). Haley Larsen’s 22 kills paced Idaho (7-4).

Women’s soccer

Carly Dobratz picked up her first goal of the season and Mallory Fox also scored as Washington State won its home opener by blanking Seattle University 2-0 in a non-conference match. Dobratz scored at 20:21 and Fox added hers at 70:47 as WSU (3-2-3) raised its all-time record against Seattle to 7-0-0.

Men’s soccer

Community Colleges of Spokane’s Matt Miller scored a pair of first-half goals as the Sasquatch and visiting North Idaho College played to a 2-2 tie at SFCC. NIC got goals from Gustavo Perez and Keith Realing.

Girls soccer

Monica Otholt had a goal and two assists in leading host Ferris to a 7-0 win over Rogers in a Greater Spokane League opener. … Elsewhere, Breanne Taylor had a goal and an assist, and teammate Jill Pecka scored on a penalty kick to lead Mead to a 4-1 win over Shadle Park at Albi Stadium. … Host Lewis and Clark cruised to a 7-0 win over North Central at Hart Field behind the play of Kenzi Grow, who scored three goals and assisted on two others. … Megan Lindsay and Ashley Ames each finished with a goal and an assist in Gonzaga Prep’s 2-0 win over visiting East Valley. … Averi Hallman scored three goals and assisted on another in Mt. Spokane’s 4-1 win at University.
