Villaro quits teaching job

Former West Valley High School teacher and head wrestling coach John Villaro has quit his job with the West Valley School District. Villaro, 35, was charged with two felony counts of assault in April after allegedly assaulting his wife.

Villaro lost his coaching position, but remained in the classroom. The district was waiting until after his trial to decide what disciplinary action to take, district spokeswoman Sue Shields said in July. “He resigned before school started,” Shields said this week. “He no longer works for us.”

His case is set for trial on Oct. 6, but attorney Rob Cossey is hopeful that his client won’t go on trial. “There are intense negotiations going on,” he said. “No one wants this to go to trial. It might be resolved in the next couple of weeks.”

Cossey said he wasn’t sure why Villaro quit his job. “I think the allegations and the stress and everything,” he said. Cossey said he is not aware of Villaro’s career plans.
