Kim builds 4-shot lead at Tour Championship

Four days after Anthony Kim humbled Sergio Garcia in the Ryder Cup, he beat 29 players just as badly Thursday at the Tour Championship at Atlanta.

Showing no effects of a Ryder Cup hangover, Kim fired off eight birdies on his way to a 6-under-par 64 in his Tour Championship debut to build a four-shot lead over Masters champion Trevor Immelman, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.

•McGill, Park, Jang share LPGA lead: At Prattville, Ala., Jill McGill, Jane Park and Jeong Jang shot 7-under 65s for a share of the Navistar LPGA Classic lead, while top-ranked Lorena Ochoa was two strokes back in her first event in a month. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum and Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., both shot 75.

•Marucci wins Senior Amateur: At Fort Worth, Texas, U.S. Walker Cup captain Buddy Marucci won the USGA Senior Amateur, beating George Zahringer 2-up at Shady Oaks Country Club.

•Lang wins 3rd Senior Women’s Am title: At Tulsa, Okla., Diane Lang won the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur for the third time in four years, beating Toni Wiesner 6 and 5 at Tulsa Country Club.

Meira joins Foyt Racing

Vitor Meira, the Indy Racing League’s most experienced non-winner, will drive for A.J. Foyt Racing in the 2009 IndyCar Series.

The 31-year-old Brazilian, who has a series-record 93 career starts without a victory, drove the past three years for Panther Racing, which earlier this week hired former IRL champion Dan Wheldon.

•Allmendinger expects race to be last in 84: AJ Allmendinger expects this weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway to be his last with Red Bull Racing. Allmendinger and Red Bull announced earlier this week they will part ways at the end of this season, and Allmendinger did not drive the No. 84 during the two-day test at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Pitt extends Dixon’s deal

Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon’s contract was extended three seasons through the 2015-16 season, a deal that came two years following his last extension.

•Rockets keep Landry: The Houston Rockets matched the Charlotte Bobcats’ three-year, $9 million offer sheet for restricted free agent Carl Landry, keeping the forward in Houston.

•Lynx rookie Wiggins takes honor: Minnesota Lynx rookie Candice Wiggins has been chosen the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year.

Grabsch wins time trial

Germany’s Bert Grabsch won the time trial world cycling championship with a strong finish to beat Canada’s Svein Tuft, at Varese, Italy. David Zabriskie of the United States took bronze, while teammate and pre-race favorite Levi Leipheimer was fourth.

•UCLA fullback Theriot out for season: Starting UCLA fullback Trevor Theriot will have surgery for a torn ligament in his right knee and miss the rest of the season.
