GSL fans cross the line

The Spokesman-Review

I wouldn’t normally do this, but the extent of harassing and poor sportsmanship has caused me to think way more than I care to about the future of “crowd participation” while enjoying our daughters play varsity volleyball in the GSL.

At a recent match between Mt. Spokane and North Central, I was watching a group of boys hovering around center court, pretty much at floor level like most enthusiastic kids do while cheering their team.

While NC was winning the first match at around 21-16, these boys started yelling obscenities toward my daughter and other players on the NC team. I don’t mind a little heckling here and there, but calling the girls losers and fat, calling out specific numbers and saying, “Hey, No. 9 … the snack bar is outside in the hall” or “Hit it to No. 2 … she sucks,” goes far and beyond what supporting your team means.

I grew up playing all the sports and all three of my daughters have played them all, too. It is unfortunate to see this in Spokane. If it weren’t for our legal system that kinda frowns on assault, I would have dragged them outside and pointed them in the direction of their homes.

I am so disgusted with Mt. Spokane athletics to let this happen on our courts of the GSL. Who’s the principal? Who are the coaches? And who are the parents that let things like this ride?

I will videotape every match for the rest of the year and find the parent of these idiots and make sure they get a copy of how pathetic and disrespectful their children are.

Have our children or parents of children become so stupid and self-absorbed that we need to have cheering classes or cheering counselors? You get caught calling someone names in the hallway at school and you get suspended. Why is it OK at our athletic events?
