Whirly bird gets a worm

Megan Joy (Associated Press / The Spokesman-Review)

Megan Joy says she was just being goofy and showing her love of birds when she flapped her way across the “American Idol” stage.

“I love birds and bird noises,” said Joy, who was eliminated Wednesday from the reality TV competition. “I just decided that if I’m goin’ out, I’m goin’ out with a bang and I’m just going to be myself. So I … flew the whole time.”

Joy created the most bizarre moment of the night – if not the season – with her flapping and squawking.

She told a teleconference Thursday that fellow low-ranking contestants Anoop Desai and Allison Iraheta had promised to make birdlike sounds for her if she were voted off.

The tattooed, 23-year-old single mother from Sandy, Utah, plans to add to her body art with an ink version of the good luck ring she wore.

Joy said she has no regrets and figured she’d be eliminated this week. She’s looking forward to spending time with her toddler son, Ryder.

“As sad as I am that I’m leaving and I’m done with the show, there is a very big part of me that cannot wait to see my son,” she said. “And it’s been too long. I’m ready to hold him in my arms again.”

Hello, John and Gina

Speaking of birds, John Stamos and Gina Gershon will star this fall in the first Broadway revival of “Bye Bye Birdie.”

The 1960 musical concerns an Elvis Presley-like rock star named Conrad Birdie who is being drafted into the Army, and the effect that has on teens in a small Ohio town.

Stamos will play the star’s manager, and Gershon will play his long-suffering secretary.

Clay molds a son

And speaking of “American Idol,” music producer David Foster sees nothing strange about his sister Jaymes having a baby with former “Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken.

She gave birth to Parker Foster Aiken last August, conceived by in-vitro fertilization.

“She’s very close with Clay, they’re best friends. It made perfect sense to me that he’d want to have a child with his best friend,” said David Foster, calling Aiken – who’s gay – a “spectacular father.”

Hey, ya – slow down!

Matt Dillon pleaded guilty to speeding this week and paid an $828 fine after being stopped while driving 106 mph on Interstate 91 in rural Northern Vermont.

Meanwhile, Andre 3000 of the hip-hop duo Outkast is free on bond after police charged him with driving 109 mph in his Porsche on a highway in suburban Atlanta.

Quoteworthy

John O’Hurley, on his singing-with-showgirls scene in the “Chicago” tour: “I got a feather up the nose the other night, the thing was waving around in my nose, I had to have it extracted, but that’s the beauty of live theater.”
