YMCA buy best for conservation
The Review’s editorial board is off base inflaming the public through its negative rhetoric (“Our View: Plan to buy unwise, a poor fit for conservation fund,” March 29). Those who know my political and conservational leanings may be shocked, but I applaud Spokane County Commissioners Mielke and Richard for their understanding of the issue and willingness to help fund the purchase of the controversial YMCA property.
This is not a development versus conservation issue as portrayed by the S-R; it’s a legacy issue. What do we want to leave our children: another high-rise condominium along the banks of the Spokane River or open space where thousands each year can marvel at the power of the river, feel the earth shake as water cascades through the narrow basalt gorge, or appreciate the same wild scene which drew native Americans over 100 years ago to this same spot?
I was intricately involved in the Conservation Futures funding for 17 years. The funds have been exceptionally well spent on prime conservation land, including wetlands, riparian areas and wildlife sanctuaries. This small site, once removed of the YMCA, will say more about conservation and the wealth of our community than all the others combined.
