Live river worth power loss

The Spokesman-Review

Fishing for steelhead is a rare privilege of living in the Pacific Northwest. It is sad that taxpayers are forced to pay for the destruction of these wonderful fish. Replace the dams that are killing 80 percent of these fish with 1,000 megawatts of clean, renewable energy and the problem is solved.

Ten years ago the Rand Corp. showed we could actually replace this energy and build 15,000 jobs doing it. The Northwest Energy Coalition has also shown that we can give 1,000 megawatts of power “back to the salmon” and still meet the region’s load growth in the 21st century.

The Snake River is worth more as a living system than as a dead channel that no one wants to look at. I say replace the energy and recover the Lower Snake River so we can look our kids in the eyes when they want the opportunity to see or catch a wild salmon.
