Argyropoulos keys Cougars’ rally past BYU

Washington State scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and posted a 12-8 come-from-behind victory over BYU in non-conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field on Monday.

Sophomore Matt Argyropoulos ignited the eruption with a solo home run and capped it with a run-scoring double. Jared Prince and Michael Weber added back-to-back two-run singles.

Derek Jones slugged his eighth home run, good for two runs in the first inning for WSU (13-13). Kent Walton and Chad Nacapoy homered for BYU (18-11).

•First baseman Ryan Wiegand smashed a two-out, fifth-inning grand slam to power Gonzaga to a 7-3 non-conference win over visiting Washington at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Kyle Conley hit his Pac-10-leading 11th home run, good for two runs, in the top of the fifth to give the Huskies (10-19) a short-lived 2-1 lead. Wiegand’s bomb in the bottom of the inning sent UW to its sixth straight defeat.

The Huskies brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but Cody Martin, GU’s fourth pitcher, got a strikeout to end it as GU went to 21-8.

•Mark Fields’ eight innings of four-hit, five-strikeout pitching in a 3-1 win at Pepperdine earned the Gonzaga senior pitcher of the week honors in the West Coast Conference.

It’s his first career weekly honor but the fourth of the season for a Bulldog.

College golf

Women: Community Colleges of Spokane, led by medalist Chelsea Kenner (Post Falls), posted a 28-stroke victory in the 36-hole Bellevue Community College Invitational.

Kenner won medalist honors in a one-hole playoff with Jenna Rochelle of Green River after they matched 160s. Kelsey Harting of CCS was third at 165. CCS, 21-1 in league matches in the 2008-09 season, had a 494-522 margin over runner-up Green River.

Men: CCS had six golfers within 10 strokes of each other, but the Sasquatch wound up fourth in the Bellevue Invitational. Jason Molner led CCS with a 149. The Sasquatch had a 604 36-hole team score. Southwestern Oregon and Bellevue tied for first with 594s.

Women’s basketball

Gonzaga sophomore Courtney Vandersloot collected her second All-America honor of the season when she named honorable mention on the WBCA/State Farm Coaches All-America team. She also was honorable mention on the Association Press All-America team.

High school baseball

Greater Spokane League: Mead scored all its runs in the final three innings to post a 17-7, six-inning win over visiting Shadle Park in the completion of a game originally scheduled for March 31. Grant Fink drove in four runs and Jake Schrader two for Mead. Tyler Pfeffer was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Shadle, which led 7-0 before Mead’s eruption. … Stefano Pau had a three-run home run and Dane Berg a three-run double to highlight a nine-run seventh inning that punctuated Central Valley’s 16-2 win over East Valley at Avista Stadium. Scott Simon had a three-run homer in the third for CV. … Billy Moon allowed one run in four innings of pitching, striking out six, and went 3 for 5, and Jacob Olsufka was 4 for 5 and scored three runs for University in an 8-1 win over Lewis and Clark at Hart Field.

Great Northern League: Pullman sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to blow open a 4-4 game en route to a 10-5 win at West Valley in what was to be the first game of a makeup doubleheader. The game started 21/2 hours late because the umpires arrived late and the second game was rescheduled for April 14. Travis Cooper’s two-run single highlighted the sixth-inning uprising. Jaimie Fertakis was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and winning pitcher Brett Druffel drove in two runs. … Medical Lake and Deer Park split a doubleheader at Deer Park. Nick Pacheco was 3 for 3, including a double and a triple, and scored two runs and Ryan Wagner allowed two hits and one run in five innings in the Cardinals’ 3-2 first-game win. Deer Park’s Tanner Knutson pitched a complete game, striking out nine, and belted a two-run homer in the Stags’ 13-7 second-game win. Cody Carr hit a three-run homer for Medical Lake.

High school softball

Greater Spokane League: Alyssa Erickson scattered six hits, striking out six and not walking anyone, to lead Central Valley to a 7-0 win at Gonzaga Prep in a makeup game.

Great Northern League: Ericka Hanson pitched a one hitter and struck out five and Amy Sterk was 3 for 3 with a two-run homer to lead Pullman to a 7-0 win in the first game of a makeup doubleheader at West Valley. The Eagles earned a split with a 7-1 win in the second game with Kelli Peckham pitching a four-hitter and striking out nine. Brooklyn Robinson scored three runs, Candice Boyd drove in three and Rachel Meagley drove in two for WV.

High school golf

Boys: Clarkston, led by medalist Tyler Carlson’s 1-under-par 71, posted a 14-stroke victory over runner-up East Valley, 385-399, in the 22-school Deer Park Invitational at Deer Park Golf Club. Three shared second at 75 – Britt Knap, Clarkston; Phil Bateman, Colville; and Evan Grinalds, Central Valley.

Girls: Megan Haase shot a 5-over-par 78 and led three Lewis and Clark golfers atop the leader board as the Tigers ran away with the victory in the Shriver Cup at Manito, posting a 341-383 margin over runner-up Gonzaga Prep. LC’s Chessey Thomas shot 81 for second.
