Mead rallies to edge Mt. Spokane

The Mead baseball team needed five runs in the sixth inning to remain undefeated in Greater Spokane League play Tuesday.

The Panthers’ Andy Larsen played a pivotal role with his bat and arm as Mead (5-0) held off visiting Mt. Spokane (3-4) 7-6.

Larsen had a two-run triple to tie the score in the sixth and threw out a runner at third base in the seventh. Teammate Preston Van Doren went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

•Also in the GSL: University remained undefeated, sweeping East Valley 13-5 and 16-1 at EV. In the first game, Nick Motsinger led U-Hi (8-0) with three hits, three runs and three RBIs. Aaron Awbery led EV (2-4) with a grand slam. The Titans scored 10 runs in the first inning of the second game. Thomas Wakem had three hits, including a grand slam, and six RBIs. … Lewis and Clark (3-5) scored 14 runs in the first inning en route to a 17-5 win over visiting North Central (1-7) at Hart Field. The Tigers coupled 11 hits with nine walks.

•Inland Empire League: Lake City used 19 hits and clutch pitching to sweep visiting Post Falls, 6-5 and 12-5. In the opener, Ben Pharis, who had three hits, got a bases-loaded strikeout to end the game. Austin Kiefer had a three-run triple and Justin Kerr had seven strikeouts in four innings to lead the T-Wolves (6-2, 2-1) in the second game. Brett Winn led PF (1-7, 0-4) with four hits.

•Intermountain League: Priest River scored four runs in the sixth as the Spartans rallied to knock off visiting Timberlake 11-9. John Butler led PR by going 3 of 5 with four RBIs. Teammate Chad Yount had two hits and three RBIs. Derek Tymesen led Timberlake with two hits.

•Great Northern League: Visiting Colville knocked off the lone remaining undefeated conference foe, topping Pullman 6-3 in a game where both teams were hitless through four innings. The Indians (5-1, 3-1) scored two unearned runs in the third and then got runs on a double from P.J. Sager in the fifth. Pullman slipped to 3-1, 2-1.

Softball

Greater Spokane League: Alisha Meade allowed no earned runs as she struck out seven and walked one to lead visiting Mead past Mt. Spokane 5-2. The Panthers’ Hailee Duncan went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Mead improved to 5-1 and Mt. Spokane slipped to 2-3. … Central Valley (5-1) shut out Rogers 12-0 in five innings at Rogers. Chrystal Holt had three hits and scored three runs. Pitcher Alyssa Erickson threw a two-hitter, striking out seven. … East Valley (4-2) scored five in the first inning, pulling away for a 9-3 win over visiting Lewis and Clark. Tiffany Lucas allowed just two hits and struck out nine in five innings. She also had two hits and three RBIs. The Knights’ Morgan Manchester had three hits and Kelsey Kurtz had three RBIs. … University (5-1) remained in a tie for first by handling visiting Gonzaga Prep (1-5) 16-3. The Warren and Moon sisters combined for nine of the Titans’ 19 hits. … Shadle Park (4-1) overwhelmed visiting Ferris (3-3) 21-4 in five innings. Haylee Cushner and Taylor Powell each went 4 for 4 and Powell knocked in four RBIs. Megan Skillingstad had a grand slam.

•Inland Empire League: Lake City pitcher Lela Work had 20 strikeouts to lead the visiting Timberwolves (8-0, 2-0) to a 3-1, 2-1 sweep of Post Falls (6-2, 2-2). Work had 11 strikeouts in the opener and nine strikeouts with no walks in the second game as she tossed a pair of four hitters. She also carried the load at the plate, knocking in two runs in the first game and knocking in the deciding two runs on a single in the sixth in the second game. Bri Joseph led PF with three hits.

•Non-league: Lakeland (5-1) scored the winning run on a passed ball against host Sandpoint in the seventh of a 4-3 win at Rathdrum. Alisha Watson led the Hawks with six strikeouts.

•Intermountain League: Timberlake scored nine runs in the deciding fifth to handle Priest River 13-2 at PR. Afton Allred led the Tigers (3-4, 1-0) with nine strikeouts.

Boys soccer

Great Northern League: Cheney topped visiting Colville 4-0. Ausin Walker led the Blackhawks (5-0) with two goals. Cheney outshot Colville (0-4) 19-8. … Bryer Reynolds scored two goals to lead West Valley (4-1) past visiting Clarkston (1-3) 2-0. … They had to wait until the 79th minute before Kevin Spangenberg collected a ball from 18 yards out, took a couple of dribbles before directing the ball into the lower left corner as Pullman (3-1) topped visiting Medical Lake (3-2) 1-0. … Deer Park (2-3), behind goals from Jack Robertson and Tyler Garland, blanked visiting Riverside (0-4) 2-0.

Track

Inland Empire League: The Post Falls boys (98-47) and girls (120-25) topped visiting Sandpoint in a dual. The Trojans boys secured the win by taking all four relays. Shaundra Scott won three events while teammates Rebecca Bauman, Kacie Shields and Angie Whalen were double winners for the Post Falls girls. Scott won the 100 meters (12.8 seconds), 200 (27.5) and long jump (14 feet, 8 inches), while Bauman captured both throws with impressive tosses – 35-10½ in the shot put and 117-6¼ in the discus.

Boys golf

Hank Frame of University fired a 6-under-par 65 to capture medalist honors at the Jim Shriver Cup Invitational at Manito Golf and Country Club. Lewis and Clark’s A team, led by second-place Justin Haase’s 68, won the team title with 291, topping runner-up Mead by 12.
