Author Mull to visit schools

Brandon Mull, author of the popular “Fablehaven” book series, will be visiting several Spokane Valley schools this week to promote literacy.

He will speak at 8:45 a.m. today at Skyview Elementary, 16924 E. Wellesley Ave., and at 10 a.m. today at the Continuous Curriculum School, also at 16924 E. Wellesley Ave. On Friday, Mull will speak at 9:45 a.m. at the Freeman School, 14917 S. Jackson Road, and at 12:45 p.m. at Seth Woodard Elementary, 7401 E. Mission Ave.

In addition, he’ll be promoting his new book Friday at Barnes & Noble, 15310 E. Indiana Ave., at 6:30 p.m.

Liberty Lake

A steeping hot Tea party

The fifth annual “Tulips and Tea” will be April 25 at noon at the Denny Ashlock Building, 22510 E. Mission Ave., in Liberty Lake.

Participants are asked to bring their own “favorite tea cup” and talk about its history or its memory.

Carolyn Starner, author of “Emerald Journey, A Walk Through Northwest Gardens” will be the keynote speaker for the event. She will speak about her own garden and give a demonstration. Tracy Rebstock will give a presentation on the history of tea.

Hostesses are needed for the Tea. The hostess will lead conversation at the table, steep the tea and invite guests.

Corporate sponsors also are needed. The business or individual would sponsor a table at three levels: $300, $200 or $100. The sponsors will receive a certificate and name recognition for their sponsorship.

The Tea is sponsored by the Friends of the Liberty Lake Municipal Library. Proceeds from the event will help purchase materials, equipment and other needs for the library.

Tickets are $15 per person.

Night egg hunt for children

The 11th annual Flashlight Egg Hunt will be Saturday at Hays Park, 1700 E. Providence Ave. and Crestline. The Hunt begins at 7:45 p.m. for ages 4 to 6, 8:30 p.m. for ages 7 to 9, and 8:45 p.m. for ages 10 to 13.

The Easter event features glo-bunnies to help hunters find eggs filled with candy and prizes. A flashlight, bag and weather-appropriate clothing are required for all participants.

Cost is $8 per child. Pre-registration is required by Friday.

The event is a fundraiser for Kids-Helping-Kids. Proceeds will support scholarships for low-income children in the Hillyard community.

Riverfront Park

Downtown egg hunt for KIX

KIX 96 and Riverfront Park will host the annual Easter Egg Hunt in the Park on Saturday at noon.

Children are asked to arrive early at the Looff Carrousel, where they will be divided into age-appropriate groups. Approximately 5,000 plastic eggs filled with prizes are being given away by KIX 96 at the event.

Stampede preview for riders

The Hoofprints 4-H Riding Club, organized by the Washington State University Spokane County Extension Office and 4-H, will hold the Stroke Stampede Ride and Run Preview on April 18 at 9 a.m. at Riverside State Park, 9711 W. Charles Road, at the old Military Air Strip.

The public is welcome to bring horses and bikes and preview the Stampede courses and learn about the event, taking place on Sept. 27 to support organizations that help stroke victims and their families.

Salvation Army celebration

The Salvation Army of Spokane will have a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of its new playgrounds at 222 E. Indiana Ave., next Thursday at 5 p.m.

The new playgrounds will benefit the more than 100 at risk and homeless children who live at the Salvation Army campus.
