Schauble ends day in second

LOS ANGELES – Washington State junior Kyle Schauble is in second place after the first day of the decathlon in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA on Thursday.

The Kennewick native scored 3,347 points, highlighted by a personal-best throw of 33 feet, 6 inches in the shot put, to trail Clayton Chaney of Rice by 235 points. WSU freshman Sean Harris is fifth with 3,174 points.

Cougars sophomore Angela Jensen is fourth after the first four events of the heptathlon with her best first-day score of 2,934 points. USC’s Nia Ali leads with 3,546 points.

In individual events, senior Phil MacArthur (Selkirk High) took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 196-2. Freshman Kjirsten Jensen was third in the women’s hammer at 150-9.
