Panhandle Health offers free classes to help smokers quit

The Panhandle Health District will offer free courses to help smokers quit.

The four-week classes will focus on nicotine addiction, battling withdrawal symptoms, techniques for dealing with a relapse and strategies for coping with urges.

Courses are available at Panhandle Health District, 8500 N. Atlas Road in Hayden, and begin Monday at 3:30 p.m. A second four-week class will begin May 11 at 3:30 p.m. The Wellness Center, 1100 A. St. in Plummer, will hold a four-week class, starting on Monday at 1 p.m.

There will be two four-week classes held in Bonner County, the first beginning Wednesday, the second beginning May 27. Both classes will be at 6:15 p.m. Participants will be directed to the class location when they register.

The Boundary Community Hospital, 6640 Kaniksu St. in Bonners Ferry, will hold a four-week course starting May 11, beginning at 6:15 p.m. And, a four-week class will be held at Shoshone Medical Wellness Building, 208 Oregon St. in Kellogg starting April 21 at 6 p.m.

Latino Culture Week events planned at NIC

North Idaho College will feature artistic and cultural performances and celebrations this week.

Beginning Monday and running through Thursday, NIC will host Latino Culture Week.

Danielle Holcomb of Dance Wise Studio in Coeur d’Alene will be giving salsa dance lessons in the Edminster Student Union Building Driftwood Bay Room on Monday.

Rosario Wohlson, a native of Peru, will speak about her home country and perform a traditional Peruvian folkdance with her son at 7 p.m. in Molstead Library Todd Hall on Tuesday. On Wednesday, George Minas and Andrea Nye will teach tango lessons in the Edminster Student Union Building Driftwood Bay Room at noon and perform the Ts’elusm.

A children’s Mexican dance group, Los Bailarines Esperanza, will perform in the Edminster Student Union Building plaza at noon.

The Latino Culture Week is sponsored by the NIC Latino Club.

Student art reception Monday

The Student Art Show, showcasing original artwork by North Idaho College art students, begins Monday.

The opening reception for the show will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in NIC’s Boswell Hall Corner Gallery.

The exhibits include graphic design, photography, printmaking, illustration, sculpture, ceramics, drawing and painting.

The event is free. The artwork will be on displey through May 8.

The Corner Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission to the gallery is free.

NIC Wind Symphony to perform Wednesday

North Idaho College’s Wind Symphony will perform “The Dreams of Children” Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

The performance includes a baseball-themed piece with the classic story of “Casey at the Bat,” narrated along with other fables such as the “Tortoise and the Hare,” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” Other musical pieces include “Cowboys,” a musical version of “Gandalf” the wizard, a collection of circus marches called “Under the Big Top,” Eric Whitacre’s “Sleep,” a medley from the “Wizard of Oz” and “Acrostic Song,” which is the last movement from an “Alice in Wonderland suite.”

Sacred Music spring concerts next weekend

The Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will perform its spring concert “Brahms to Berkey” at First Presbyterian Church, 521 Lakeside Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and next Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per person and $8 for students and seniors.

Care-package items sought for Marines

The 1st Battalion 5th Marines will deploy to Afghanistan and are in need of supplies.

Community members are being asked to contribute what they can for care packages that will be sent with them.

Items that have been requested by the Marines include: Big John’s Bag of socks; all sizes of underwear; hard candy; toiletries; beef jerky; coffee; hot cocoa; peanuts; Cheese-Its; baby wipes; travel-size games; cookies; SPF 48 sun block; Nutri-grain bars; Pop-Tarts; travel size footballs and soccer balls.

Items can be dropped off before April 20 at the Marine Corps Career Center, 201 W. Prairie Shopping Center in Hayden. Center hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Chamber kite workshop, festival Saturday

The third annual Hayden Chamber of Commerce Kite Festival will be Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at Broadmoore Park in Hayden.

The festival is for kids of all ages and includes prizes for homemade kites in the categories of: most colorful, best built, largest, smallest, most interesting kite tail and best flyer.

A kite building workshop will be held at the Hayden GEMS Senior Center, 9428 N. Government Way, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
