Colville’s McGrane shares lead

A tie in the women’s heptathlon and a fraternal one-two in the men’s decathlon highlighted day one of the 2009 Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championship on Monday in Tacoma.

Puget Sound’s Caitlin McGrane, a junior from Colville, and Willamette’s Brooke Smith share first in the heptathlon with 2,618 points. Linfield twins Josh and Jeremy Lovell are 1-2, respectively, in the decathlon with 3,748 and 3,541 points.

McGrane won the 200 and was second in the 100 hurdles.

Whitworth sophomore Courtney Hutchins is eighth in the pentathlon with 1,914 points.

Junior Curtis Powell leads three Pirates in the decathlon with 3,189 points.

The event winds up today. The rest of the NWC track and field championships will be in Forest Grove, Ore., April 24-25.

• Whitworth junior Emmanuel Bofa, who defeated several runners from Division I schools to win the 800 in an NCAA-provisional qualifying time of 1:52.22 at the Washington-Oregon Clash, then came from behind to anchor Whitworth to a win in the 4x400 relay, is the NWC track athlete of the week.

Pac-10: Washington State sophomore Jeshua Anderson is the men’s track athlete of the week for a second consecutive week. He won the 400 hurdles invitational race at the UCLA Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational in an improved NCAA Regional Qualifying and nation-leading time of 49.44 seconds. He also improved his NCAA RQ time in the 110 hurdles with a 14.20.

College baseball

WCC: Gonzaga (23-10), which won two of three games from then-No. 21-ranked San Diego during the weekend, earned its first national ranking of 2009, moving into No. 22 in the Baseball America poll.

•Bulldogs junior Steven Ames, who pitched the series-clinching 4-2 victory over San Diego, is the West Coast Conference pitcher of the week. He limited the WCC’s top-hitting team to six hits and one earned run and struck out a career-high 10.

College golf

WCC men: Gonzaga sophomore Kyle Huus is tied for third with a 5-under-par 139 after 36 holes in the West Coast Conference tournament in Vallejo, Calif., that winds up today. He’s four shots back of leader Greg Moss of Loyola Marymount. San Francisco has the team lead at 565. GU is seventh at 584.

WCC women: Rachel Sibbitt of Gonzaga shares sixth at 9-over 153 after 36 holes of the conference tournament in Vallejo, Calif. Jayvie Agojo of team leader Pepperdine has a four-shot lead at 146. The Waves lead San Francisco 602-603.

High school baseball

Greater Spokane League: Gonzaga Prep (4-4) got 3-for-4 performances from Connor Roff, Alec Albinson and Nathan Motsinger, who each drove in a run apiece, in a 9-5 win over visiting Shadle Park (3-7) in a makeup game. Brian Thomas was 2 for 4 with an RBI for Shadle.

High school girls golf

Savana Bezdicek of Mt. Spokane won a playoff over Kaitlen Parsons of University with a birdie on the second hole to claim medalist honors in the Deer Park Invitational after both shot 5-over-par 77s for 18 holes.

Lewis and Clark had a 351-383 margin over Central Valley in the 16-school field.

•Allyssa Nilson of Lewiston claimed medalist honors with a 77 to lead the Bengals to a 13-stroke victory over Moscow, 341-354, in the Coeur d’Alene Invitational at Hayden Lake Country Club. Genna Dodge of Post Falls was second at 81.
