The Grounds and Grub coffee stand along South Bowdish Road is under new ownership.

And Rachelle Latapie of Chattaroy is hopeful her twists on coffee along with homemade scones and expanded deli services will bring customers coming back for more.

“I love coffee – not plain coffee – I’m a flavor girl,” she says, noting that she is well stocked with flavors to offer everything from Mandarin Mocha to Sweet Cinnamon, as well as noncoffee smoothie-style options.

Plus, “everybody needs a scone with their coffee,” she likes to say. Latapie offers her freshly baked goods in varieties that include peach cobbler, almond poppy seed and chocolate chip. Each scone cost $2.25 and she takes orders for $24.75 a dozen.

In addition to the sweet and caffeinated, the young entrepreneur recognized her new business location near the corner of Dishman-Mica and Bowdish roads as a great opportunity to prepare meals for those who might be in a rush.

“I wanted to do the deli and take-and-bake pizza. There are a lot of people living in this neighborhood, but there’s no fast food right around here.”

In addition to longer and consistent operating hours, Latapie expanded the food menu to include freshly prepared pizzas ranging from $8 to $13, along with cold and hot sub sandwiches. She also offers $2.50 kids’ meals and a variety of salad options. Call-in orders are welcome, and Latapie offers minimal delivery if time allows for the sole employee.

Her coffee menu has grown to include specialty coffee and noncoffee drinks, either hot, cold or blended drinks. She offers coffee roasted by Waverly’s Coffee of Spokane. Pizzas are made on site using preformed dough and specialty toppings.

Latapie first learned about the business opportunity while reading want ads online. She became the fifth owner of the 5-year-old business location in March and is hopeful her $7,500 investment in business and equipment pays off.

“I love interacting with people – I’ve had a lot of good feedback, so that’s what makes me want to stay.”
