Fire razes Waitts Lake-area home

A Stevens County couple escaped without injuries when a fire early Saturday destroyed the home they were renting near Waitts Lake.

Just before 5 a.m. Saturday Lois Culp and Jason Hail escaped from the single-level residence at 3282 Waitts Lake Road, about three miles from Valley, Wash.

The occupants ran from the building and used a neighbor’s phone to call in the fire, said Assistant Stevens County Fire District Chief Irv Schick.

The first fire district unit arrived at 5:06 a.m., Schick said. The district dispatched three engines, two tenders and a quick-attack vehicle, said District Fire Chief Tim Van Doren. By 6 a.m. the fire had engulfed the home, forcing firefighters to pull back and rely on defensive control, said Van Doren.

Van Doren said the cause of the blaze has not been identified.

Streets close for Cure race

Today’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will close the downtown segments of Spokane Falls Boulevard, Riverside Avenue and Main Street from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

The course starts at the corner of Spokane Falls and Bernard Street, heads west to Lincoln Street and then follows Riverside into Browne’s Addition.

The Browne’s Addition race area includes parts of Chestnut, Cannon and Elm streets between Riverside and Second.

Also closed will be West First from Elm to Cedar, forming the return leg of the race, which concludes near the start point on Bernard. The Washington-Stevens couplet and all north-south traffic on the Monroe Street Bridge will be closed during the race as well.

Company recalls snack product

Nature’s World is recalling 88 cases of NW Delights Deluxe Mixed Nuts distributed to retail stores and sold in bulk bins because the nuts may be contaminated with salmonella.

The recalled product was distributed to Safeway, Rosauers and Thriftway stores in Washington, Oregon, Montana and Alaska between Jan. 21 and April 17 this year. Consumers can call (253) 891-0425 for information.
