The least expensive news media are radio and newspapers. Loss of newspapers will cut information flow to the low-income and rural segments of our society.
The cost to access electronic news media is borne by the user. Basic requirements are a recent model computer or cell phone, broadband access, security software and electricity. Some ISP providers (i.e. AT&T) have surprised subscribers with hefty bills for online time. Library access is restricted by distance, hours of operation and policies.
“Free press” in fact has never been free, but at least it has been affordable.
