EV graduate finishes basic training

•Air Force Airman Ryan Bahr graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is a 2008 graduate of East Valley High School.

•Pfc. Calvin Smith II has been promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps.

He graduated from Reardan High School 1985 and is the son of Cal and Barbara Smith.

•Navy Ensign Amanda Jordan completed Officer Development School in Newport, R.I.,and was promoted to lieutenant junior grade.

She graduated from Central Valley High School in 2001 and is the daughter of Ganene Jordan, of Spokane Valley, and Joe Fugere, of Seattle.

Patrick Howe was awarded the rank Eagle Scout, the highest level in the Boy Scouts. He is a member of Troop 171.

For his project, Howe built a wooden fence at the equestrian area of Riverside State Park.

He is a junior at Shadle Park High School and the son of David and Laura Howe, of Spokane.

•Air Force Lt. Col. Gary Kubat has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

He is the son of Jerome and Julie Kubat, of Spokane, and a 1986 graduate of Mead High School.

•Two local residents recently graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego.

Kyle McNeilly is a 2008 University High School graduate and the son of Greg and Karla McNeilly, of Spokane Valley. Andrew Wood is the son of Joseph Wood and Janelle Reece and graduated in 2008 from Rogers High School.

Christina Jordan has been awarded a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship from Eastern Washington University for the 2009-2010 academic year.

She is a senior at The Oaks Academy in Spokane Valley and the daughter of Andrew and Jill Jordan, of Spokane.

•Heather Overstreet, a senior at Eastern Washington University, has been awarded a Weissenborn Geology Scholarship. The scholarship is given to juniors and seniors majoring in Geology.

Overstreet is the daughter of Marcia Girnus, of Fairfield, and graduated in 1989 from Lewis and Clark High School.

•Western Washington University recently announced local residents awarded President’s Scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year.

David Decker received a $2,000 award. He will graduate from Shadle Park High School and is the son of Kevin and Sandra Decker, of Spokane.

Sammy Alurfali was awarded $500. He is the son of Michael and Khawla Alurfali, of Spokane, and will graduate from Mead High School.

Haley Nelson was also awarded $500. She will graduate from Mt. Spokane High School and is the daughter of Carl and Margaret Nelson.

Brandon West was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich. He is a graduate of North Central High School and the son of Cliff and Michelle West, of Spokane.

•Graphic design students from Spokane Falls Community College were awarded medals and scholarships in the 2009 ADDY Awards, hosted by the Spokane Advertising Federation.

Megan Strope received a gold medal and Best of Division: Poster. Elizabeth Abshire and Holly Meagley won gold medals in Packaging. Brennon Poynor and Carrie Stauffer received silver medals for Packaging. Kevin Armstrong, John Mujica, Lindsey Matkovich, Elizabeth Abshire, and Jacqueline Blankenship won silver medals in Poster. Kevin Armstrong also won a silver medal in T-Shirt.

In Ad Campaign, Kevin Armstrong, Kalan Piukkula, John Baker, and Holly Meagley were awarded silver medals.

Kevin Armstrong, Laura Chang, Jaron Ballard, and Jason Bansemer each received Toni Robideaux Scholarships.

•Eastern Washington University recently awarded local high school seniors with a Presidential Scholarship for $2,000 for the 2009-2010 academic year. The scholarship was awarded to high school students with a cumulative high school grade-point average of 3.8 or higher or an SAT score of 1250 or higher.

Courtney Hammond is the daughter of Steve and Sue Hammond, of Spokane Valley, and will graduate from University High School.

Katina DeJarnett will graduate from Central Valley High School and is the daughter of Renee DeJarnett, of Spokane Valley.
