In brief: Herbs available at Manito plant sale

The Associated Garden Clubs of Spokane will hold a plant sale at Manito Park, just east of Gaiser Conservatory at Duncan Gardens, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Annuals, perennials, house plants and more will be for sale. Herbs, including rosemary, oregano, basil and parsley, and varieties of tomatoes are new to this yearly sale.

Proceeds from the plant sale will benefit garden and landscape projects for Spokane. Recent projects include the YMCA Rooftop Garden, Hospice of Spokane, and the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens.

West Spokane

Compost trainees will get free bins

On Saturday, Spokane Master Composters will host a Spring Compost Fair at the John A. Finch Arboretum, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will be held in conjunction with the Arboretum’s Arbor Day festivities.

The event includes a “hot” compost pile and worm bin, and attendees can learn about which materials to use in composting, how to build and turn a compost pile and how to choose an appropriate bin.

Spokane County attendees (with identification verifying residency), can receive a free compost bin, one per household, after completing the various activities. The bins are provided by the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System and the Washington state Department of Ecology. The Master Composters are volunteers of the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.

The event is free and open to the public.

Series explores food, social change

Project HOPE Spokane, in association with Riverfront Farm and Green Jobs Not Jails, is hosting a food systems educational series, titled “Seeds of Change.” The following classes will be held at The Porch Church, 1804 W. Broadway Ave. in Spokane, at 7 p.m.

The classes are free with a donation for local food banks or seeds for farms.

“Seeds of Hope: Models for Urban Agriculture and Dirt” will be on April 30; “Beyond Organic: Building Community” will be held May 14; “Food: A Global and Local Issue” will be on May 21; “Cultivating Change and Food from the Hood” will be held on May 28; and “Good Food and Seeds of Change: the RF Story” will be held on June 11.

Mobius offers help making mom’s gift

Kids can come to River Park Square on May 9 to make a special gift for their mom for Mother’s Day.

From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., kids can create colorful flower baskets and special cards especially for mom. Fresh flowers and other supplies will be available and experts will be on hand.

The cost per basket is $15. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Mobius Children’s Museum.
