Cool weather remains through weekend

Cool April weather will rule over the weekend with the chance of rain or snow showers adding to the spring chill on Saturday and Sunday. The Inland Northwest is under a northerly flow today in the wake of frontal activity that spread across the region Wednesday and ended several days of balmy spring weather. The change brought some snow showers to the region on Thursday and caused the region’s rivers to rise with snow melt. Rivers were cresting below flood stage today, forecasters said. Highs today reached the middle 50s. The low tonight in Spokane should reach freezing. Similar temperatures are expected Saturday and Sunday with lows both nights in the middle 30s. Skies will be partly cloudy today, and a chance of showers is seen during the daytime hours on Saturday and Sunday. Showers on Sunday could include snow. Weak disturbances in the upper atmosphere are expected to cross the region tonight through Sunday night. Looking ahead, forecasters said there is a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain or snow showers on Saturday, Sunday and Sunday night. The cool and unsettled weather should persist through Thursday when temperatures finally rebound to the 60s with the predicted arrival of a high pressure area currently located to the west over the Pacific Ocean, forecasters said. Lewiston this morning tied a record low of 30 degrees for the date, which was previously reached in 2002. Spokane had a low of 26 today, which was above the record of 21 for April 24, set in 2002. Normal temperatures for April 25 are 60 for a high and 37 for a low. Temperatures across the region were at or below freezing this morning at 7 a.m. today with 28 degrees at Spokane International Airport, 32 at Coeur d’Alene Airport, 34 in Sandpoint, 32 in Pullman, 28 in Deer Park and 30 in Prosser.
