Cuteness counts

The Spokesman-Review

The hypocrisy of the Humane Society regarding the treatment of ground squirrels is astounding, and trying to make it an ethical issue is downright laughable.

Where would be the hue and cry for “relocation” if the problem were rats in a downtown condominium or rattlesnakes in an elementary school playground? Humans have the intelligence to make choices, and that explains why we protect honeybees and ladybugs but feel no remorse over squashing a spider or a mosquito. If this were truly an “ethical” issue, the Humane Society would advocate equal protection for all species, not just the ones that are cute.
