Rogers defeats Ferris for 1st win

They are winless no longer.

It took 13 tries, but the visiting Rogers Pirates baseball team finally broke through with a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Ferris in Greater Spokane League action Friday.

The Pirates (1-12) got clutch hitting in a three-run sixth hitting. Tyler Orlowski had a two-run single and Jacob Campbell knocked in a run.

Justin Meusy got the win in his first varsity start. Jake Partridge picked up a save by striking out the final six batters.

Elsewhere in the GSL: Thomas Wakem’s two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning broke open a close game as league-leading University (13-1) stopped visiting Mt. Spokane (9-7) 7-3. John Rapose ran his record to 4-0 by scattering eight hits while striking out eight and walking just one. Nate Blackham went 2 for 2 for the Wildcats. … Mead (12-2) stayed within a half game of U-Hi with an 11-3 win over visiting North Central (1-11). Nick Bond had the big bat for the Panthers with a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a three-run shot in the fifth. Seth Peterson had three RBIs including a solo homer. Taylor Hustad led NC with two hits including a two-run homer that gave the Indians a 3-0 lead in the third. … Donnie Santos had a double and a homer while scoring two runs to lead Lewis and Clark (7-7) to an 8-2 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (6-8) at Hart Field. Dean Neilson also had two hits, including a homer. Benny Baird scattered nine hits while twice working out of bases-loaded jams. … Shadle Park (6-10), which trailed 6-0 early, rallied to knock off visiting East Valley (4-8) 10-9. Parker Scott hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the seventh to highlight a five-RBI day.

Inland Empire League: Visiting Lewiston (16-3, 13-2) clinched no worse than a tie for the league title with a 9-5 and 8-4 sweep over Lake City (7-11, 3-9). The Bengals can clinch the league title and top seed to the Region I tournament with a win at Moscow on Tuesday. Lewiston used a pair of four-run innings in both games to seize control. Liam Park pitched a complete game in the opener for the Bengals, striking out five. Kyle Knigge had a three-run homer to lead Lewiston in the second game.

Intermountain League: Orofino (14-1, 12-1) swept visiting Priest River (3-8, 3-7) 9-5 and 14-4 in a doubleheader.

Great Northern League: Visiting Cheney (13-1, 9-1) remained in first by sweeping Riverside (1-11, 0-10) 12-3 and 17-0. In the opener, the Blackhawks scored seven runs in the seventh inning to cement the win. In the second game, sophomore Cameron Lowe threw a one-hit shutout. … Pullman (8-3, 7-3) swept visiting Medical Lake (2-11, 1-8) 9-2 and 9-6. Travis Cooper had five hits in the doubleheader, including a two-run single in the first game. He had three hits and two RBIs in the second. Jamie Fertakis picked up the win in the opener, allowing just three hits while striking out seven.

Softball

Greater Spokane League: Jordan Schmerer and Jessica Moon both went 3 for 4 to lead visiting University (13-1) to a 13-5 win over Mt. Spokane (7-6). Moon scored twice and drove in a run. … Central Valley (11-2), behind a two-hit shutout from Alyssa Erickson, topped visiting Gonzaga Prep (3-9) 7-0. Alexa Morales led the Bears at the plate, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. … Visiting Shadle Park (10-4) pounded out 15 hits in a 15-1 win in five innings over Lewis and Clark (4-9) at Hart Field. Vali Reid went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. … North Central (5-9) edged Ferris (3-11) 4-2 at Ferris. Kailee Brown went 4 for 4 to lead the Indians. Hilary Johnson had three hits for Ferris. … East Valley (6-7) topped Rogers (1-12) 5-2 at EV. Tiffany Lucas led the Knights, striking out 14. Justine Simpson had two hits and an RBI.

Great Northern League: West Valley (8-3, 7-1) took two from visiting Deer Park (8-5, 2-4), 4-3 and 12-2. In the first game, Rachel Meagley had 13 strikeouts and Kelli Peckham had 15 strikeouts in the second game. Heather Cleveland drove in the winning run in the second game with a single in the seventh. … Pullman (10-3, 7-1) swept visiting Medical Lake (0-12, 0-6), 10-0 and 9-3. Erica Hanson, who had eight strikeouts, led the Greyhounds with two hits and four RBIs in the first game. Hanson came back with 12 strikeouts in the second game and Amy Sterk was 4 for 5. … Cheney (3-10, 2-6) swept visiting Riverside (0-12, 0-8) 6-2 and 26-0. Jolene Millspaugh had two hits and two RBIs in the first game for the Blackhawks, who had 21 hits in the second game. Nicole Lane pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the second game.

Boys soccer

Greater Spokane League: Central Valley (8-1) stopped Mead (7-3) 2-1. Holden Newberg tied the match for CV in the 51st minute, and Justin Guerrinha got past three players before crossing to Robert Wulf for the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute. … Ferris (7-2) slipped past Shadle Park (1-9) 3-2. Joe Fenter led the Highlanders with two goals. … Lewis and Clark (8-0) had to go to a shootout before stopping North Central (4-5) 2-1. The Tigers had 38 shots on goal. LC goalie Chris Hollman stopped the final shot by the Indians’ Aaron Allie to secure the win. NC goalie Tony Buckley had 31 saves. … University (6-3) handled Mt. Spokane (1-8) 6-0. Two Titans had two goals each. … East Valley (5-4), behind goals from Thomas Tran and Jacob Fitterer, topped Gonzaga Prep (2-8) 3-1. The game was stopped at the 75-minute mark because of fighting, according to EV coach Jeff Paulus.

Boys golf

Coeur d’Alene Invite: Lewiston shot 318 to top runner-up Coeur d’Alene by two strokes at Avondale Golf Club. Alex Pounds of CdA, Chris Williams of Moscow and Nick McCaslin of Mead each shot 2-over-par 74s. John Forsman and Brandon Koehler led Lewiston with 77s.

Girls golf

Big East Invitational: Lewis and Clark shot 231 to edge Moscow by five strokes at Wandermere Golf Course. Savana Besdicek of Mt. Spokane earned medalist honors with a 71. Megan Haase paced LC with a 73.
