X-Men author visiting to promote comics, flick

Chris Claremont, the author of the X-Men and Wolverine comic books and a novelist, will be making a presentation at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, 702 E. Front Ave., on Friday at 4 p.m.

He also will be available that day for a signing and meet-and-greet at 6 p.m. at Riverstone Theater, and prior to the 7 and 8 p.m. screenings of the X-Men movie.

Claremont was born in London in 1950, and made his entry into comic writing when he was given the fledgling title, “Iron Fist” in 1974. That also teamed him with John Byrne for the first time. Len Wein then gave him the writing duties for the relaunched X-Men.

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day and, beginning at noon, free comic books will be given out at the library while supplies last, courtesy of the Friends of the Library.

Free comic books also will be given out at the Post Falls Public Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and at each of the seven Kootenai-Shoshone Area Libraries – Athol, Hayden and Rathdrum – from 10 to 11 a.m.; Harrison and Pinehurst, from 11 a.m. to noon; Spirit Lake, from noon to 1 p.m.; and from the Bookmobile at the Worley City Hall, 10 to 11 a.m.

Free comics will also be available Saturday at Lighting Comics, 411 Haycraft, No. C1, where Claremont will have a signing event from noon to 4 p.m.
