Sea kayakers tell Alaska tale

Three Western Washington adventures are coming to Spokane to present a slide and video program detailing their 500-mile sea-kayak tour around the Kenai Peninsula.

The free show is 7 p.m. Monday at the Corbin Community Center, 827 W. Cleveland Ave., sponsored by the Spokane Canoe & Kayak Club.

Matt Nelson, Mathew Wendell and Djuna Mascall made the challenging trip in 2008.

Prudes beware: birds do wild thing

It’s the season of love as male birds strut their stuff to attract a mate, or in some cases, as many mates as possible.

Some species, such as bald eagles, mated in February. A peregrine falcon male at Palouse Falls offered a stick to a female to win her affection before copulating in March.

But many species are just getting into high breeding gear. Male snipe can be heard above Lincoln County wetlands flirting with females by diving through the air to make a rapid, high-pitched whoop-whoop sound.

Wild turkey toms are obvious as they strut and gobble in the wilds — and around town.

Teri Pieper of Twisp had her camera ready recently to capture a male dusky grouse (aka blue grouse) in full display.

Tipped by a neighbor, she headed out at dawn and found the bird strutting in the middle of a gravel road.

“We were able to watch this bird for 15 minutes, but only got a fleeting glimpse of the female,” she said.

The male “seemed embarrassed to have been caught in the act, so to speak. He tried to keep a bitterbrush between us.”

Rapid answer to disabilities

What: Free showing and discussion of “Right to Risk,” a documentary that follows eight people with significant physical disabilities on a 15-day, 225-mile whitewater raft trip on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon.

When: Saturday, 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Panel discussion follows 3 p.m. show.
