Roundup: Cougars get past USC, in second place in Pac-10

Shea Vucinich homered and drove in three runs as Washington State beat USC 6-4 on Sunday in Los Angeles for a 2-1 win in the Pac-10 baseball series.

The Cougars (21-18, 10-5 Pac-10) are in sole possession of second place in the conference.

David Stilley (2-0) allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings.

WSU jumped on top early with a three-run second inning. Ryan Peterson had an RBI single, and Vucinich delivered a two-run single. His solo home run gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning. Derek Jones drove home run a run in the seventh, and Michael Weber doubled home an insurance run in the ninth.

Pac-10: Kyle Conley, Troy Scott and David Bentrott homered and Andrew Kittredge pitched seven shutout innings as Washington completed a three-game sweep of Oregon with a 6-3 win in Eugene, Ore.

The Huskies (18-22, 7-8 Pac-10) won their fourth in a row and beat the Ducks six out of seven chances this season.

Kittredge, a freshman out of Ferris High School, faced only two batters over the minimum over his seven innings of work. He allowed three hits and a walk and struck out seven.

West Coast Conference: Gonzaga completed a series sweep of Santa Clara with an 11-1 win in Santa Clara, Calif., that kept the Bulldogs tied with San Diego atop the conference standings.

Ryan Wiegand had four hits and four RBIs for the Bulldogs (28-13, 10-5 WCC) and reached base in all six of his plate appearances. Evan Wells had three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, and Drew Heid added three hits, two runs and two RBIs. The Zags had 19 hits.

Steven Ames (7-0) recorded his second complete-game victory of the season. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out four.

Northwest Conference: Chad Flett and Brent Flyberg pitched a pair of complete-game victories as Whitworth swept a doubleheader with visiting Whitman, winning the opener 3-1 and the nightcap 9-2.

The Pirates (10-26, 8-20 NWC) have completed their season.

Softball

Northwest Conference: Pacific completed a four-game sweep of Whitworth with a doubleheader sweep, winning 5-2 and 6-2 at Marks Field.

The games were the last of the season for both teams. The Pirates finished 15-21, 11-15 NWC, good for fifth place.

Jesse Garcia’s home run capped a five-run rally in the seventh inning of the Boxers’ 6-2 victory in the second game.

Pac-10: No. 7 Arizona demonstrated why it has the highest-scoring offense in the nation, connecting for five home runs in an 11-0 win over No. 3 Washington in Tempe, Ariz.

The Wildcats now have 111 home runs this season, most in the country. The NCAA record for home runs in a season is 126, and Arizona has eight games remaining.

Kimi Pohlman extended her hitting streak to six games for the Huskies (35-9, 8-6 Pac-10).

Rowing

Gonzaga’s women’s Novice 8+ defeated Radcliffe on the final day of the Charles River Challenge in Boston, while the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ all finished third in their races.
