Baseball notebook: Glavine improving

Braves pitcher Tom Glavine felt better about his ailing left shoulder after throwing in the outfield Monday, but the 305-game winner still isn’t sure if he’ll be able to extend his career.

The 43-year-old Glavine stopped throwing for two weeks after his shoulder began hurting during a minor league rehab start. He threw in the outfield before Sunday’s game at Cincinnati, then withstood a more strenuous test – two sets of 15 throws from 70 feet – prior to the opener of a three-game series against St. Louis at Turner Field,

Baez bounces back

Any doubts Danys Baez had about whether he could effectively rebound from elbow surgery have been buried under a series of impressive performances.

Baez was 0-6 with a 6.44 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles in 2007 before going on the disabled list with an elbow injury. The right-hander underwent elbow ligament surgery in October of that year and missed the 2008 season.

Now he’s one of the most effective pitchers in the Baltimore bullpen. Baez did not allow a hit or a walk in three scoreless innings against Texas on Sunday, earning his first win since July 7, 2006, against San Francisco as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pujols corrects funk

Stuck in a funk, Albert Pujols kept looking for a flaw. Videotape study detected the trouble: Last year’s N.L. MVP was too eager at the plate.

Pujols corrected the problem, as evidenced by his performance in the St. Louis Cardinals’ latest homestand – 9 for 20 with three home runs and 11 RBIs, and only one strikeout.

The big week came after Pujols went 1 for 9 with one RBI in a three-game set at Wrigley Field, a series in which he found himself jumping at pitches.

Romero files suit

Suspended Phillies reliever J.C. Romero has filed suit against Ergopharm and Proviant Technologies, a nutritional supplement manufacturer, alleging an unlisted ingredient in one of its products caused him to test positive for a banned substance.

Also named in the suit are Vitamin Shoppe and GNC.
