GSL soccer: Undefeated LC clinches at least title tie

Lewis and Clark coupled two early goals with impenetrable defense to clinch at least a tie for the Greater Spokane League boys soccer championship.

LC defeated visiting Ferris 3-0 Wednesday afternoon taking advantage of the breeze at Hart Field.

“The wind definitely played a factor today,” LC coach Casey Curtis said of the victory over the Tigers’ South Hill rival. “It’s tough playing in the wind, especially here at Hart. That’s one of the reasons we love it here.”

Jamall Angell scored 8 minutes apart for a 2-0 lead that proved more than enough for a defense that kept the Saxons’ attack at bay. The Tigers (9-2, 9-0) added a late goal on an indirect free kick that Casey Ames wound around the Saxons’ wall.

LC has 26 points, three more than Central Valley. The Tigers are at CV in Friday’s season finale. Also at stake is their first undefeated league season since 2004.

The wind may have had a direct influence on the first goal. The ball appeared to settle in Ferris goalkeeper Nick Stebbins’ hands, but it came loose. Angell, in close on the play, found the ball and open goal.

“It was a flick on, bounced off the keeper and I was just right there,” the sophomore midfielder said.

Curtis said that Stebbins had it, but the “wind just blew it away from him. Jamall’s job is to crash the net and he was rewarded.”

On the second score, forward Jack Gilles, who had two assists, hit Angell with a crisp pass and he hit it past Stebbins into the left side of the goal.

From there it was left to the defense.

“The mids mark up with the offense and we try to keep it as tight as we can and challenge every ball,” senior Brad Zentz said.

The loss left Ferris (7-4, 6-3, 18 points) in fourth place among 4A schools and in league.

Spokane (2-8, 1-7, 3). Thomas Tran scored twice and Andrew Mastronardi scored a goal and added an assist. … Gonzaga Prep (5-7, 2-7 6) made five shootout goals following scoreless regulation and overtime for a 1-0 win at Shadle Park (2-10, 1-9, 4). … University (9-3, 6-3, 18) tied for fourth at Rogers (1-11, 1-8 3) by winning 5-0.Mikey Ramos, Evan Frobe and Dawson Burchak each had a goal and assist.
