Basketball

Riverside High graduate Angela Hartill has signed a contract to play women’s professional basketball with Oberhausen, Germany.

Hartill, who played with the University of New Mexico, leaves next Sunday to join the team. She is listed as the team’s top center on its Web site.

Hartill averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game during her senior season with the Lobos. She started 64 of the team’s 69 games the past two seasons.

Academics

Gonzaga University’s volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 season.

GU was one of two West Coast Conference teams to win the award, given to teams that maintain at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. GU’s players had a 3.34 GPA.

Awards

Former collegiate baseball coach Jim Wasem Sr. will receive the Eastern Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame Service and Contribution Award during ceremonies on Oct. 10.

Wasem coached 23 years, including nine at Eastern where he compiled a record of 230-250-1.

Eastern dropped the sport following the 1990 season, Wasem’s last.

Disability Championships

Team St. Luke’s earned 122 medals, including 80 golds, during the National Junior Disability Championships at St. Charles, Mo.

The team accounted for 23 record-breaking or record-matching scores.

Team members include: Kyle Babcock, Carmen Campbell, Kelsie Christensen, Jordan Clyburn, Bob Hunt, Michelle Kazuba, Chelsea McClammer, Christine Nielson, Emily Owens, Austan Pierce, Austin Pruitt, Isaiah Rigo, Mikila Salazar, Susannah Scaroni, Kim Sutton, Amberlynn Weber and Casey Zeigler.

Hirings

Gonzaga University director of ticket operations Chris Johnson announced the hiring of Josh Cox as the department’s ticket manager/travel coordinator. Cox comes to GU from Wake Forest University.

Rowing

Former Washington State University rower Sarah Waterfield will represent Canada at the World Rowing Championships, Aug. 23-30 in Poznan, Poland.

Waterfield completed her Cougars career in 2007.

Senior Games

Spokane’s John Harvey won three gold medals in badminton during the National Senior Games at Stanford (Calif.) University.

Harvey won in men’s singles (85-89), men’s doubles with Jim Bosco (80-85) and mixed doubles with Virginia Smith (85-89).

Soccer

Gonzaga University hired Lester Melendez as goalkeeper coach for its women’s team, head coach Amy Edward announced.

Melendez served as volunteer assistant coach the last three seasons at the University of Miami.

Track and field

Six athletes from Washington, including state long jump champion Liz Cobb of Chewelah, have committed to attend Eastern Washington University and compete in track and field.

Cobb won the State 1A title with a long jump of 17-61/4. She also placed fourth in the 200-meter run, fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the 100.

Central Valley graduate Emilee Deishl also signed with the Eagles. Deishl placed second in the javelin (141-3) at last year’s State 4A meet.

Also signed to letters of intent: transfer Colleen Meas of Camano Island, who earned NCAA Division II All-America honors in the pole vault at the University of Mary in North Dakota; Jasmine Stray, Centralia, throws; Olivia Ward, Seattle, jumps; and Taymussa Miller, Richland, jumps.
