Sidelined Virginia Tech will have a new starting tailback in a season of great expectations after redshirt sophomore Darren Evans tore a ligament in his left knee during practice Tuesday. Evans started just eight games for the Hokies last season but led the team with 1,265 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

•Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said linebacker Tyler Moeller will miss the season. The fourth-year junior from Cincinnati injured his head when it hit the floor during a family trip in Florida about two weeks ago.

Recovering Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol had surgery on his left index finger after an injury during practice with Spain’s national team. He will be sidelined at least three weeks.

Charged A grand jury added a new charge against a former Louisville (Ky.) high school football coach scheduled for trial this month in the death of a 15-year-old player who collapsed at practice. Jason Stinson was indicted on a charge of first-degree wanton endangerment, commonwealth’s attorney’s office spokesman Steve Tedder said. Stinson was charged in January with reckless homicide in the death last August of Pleasure Ridge Park sophomore Max Gilpin and has pleaded not guilty. Gilpin collapsed at practice and died three days later after his body temperature reached 107 degrees.

Waived Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Juqua Parker has waived his preliminary hearing in a marijuana possession charge. Parker is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana stemming from a traffic stop early on Aug. 5 near the team’s training camp at Bethlehem, Pa.

Requested Roush Fenway Racing has asked a federal court to dismiss a wrongful termination charge made by a former crew member for Carl Edwards. The motion filed in U.S. District Court in Charlotte, N.C., does not address Jason Myers’ claim that Roush officials violated the Family Medical Leave Act. Roush officials say that Myers should be seeking a breach-of-contract claim – not wrongful termination.

Approved The Colorado Springs (Colo.) city council approved a deal that will keep the U.S. Olympic Committee in town for the next 30 years. The council voted 8-1 to fund $16 million in improvements to the Olympic Training Center, part of a $53 million deal.
