Healing Swimmer Michael Phelps is still nursing a sore ankle from the car accident he was in Thursday, but the Olympic gold medalist intends to resume training Monday. In a message on his official Facebook site, Phelps also expressed concern for the woman involved in the car crash, which occurred when she ran a red light, according to Baltimore police. The Olympic star was driving with an invalid, out-of-state license and told police he drank a beer about 75 minutes before he was involved in an accident. Police did not administer field sobriety tests because Phelps showed no signs of being impaired by alcohol.
Pleaded Former NBA player Grant Gondrezick has pleaded guilty in a mortgage fraud case that involved the sale of 24 homes in Houston suburbs. U.S. Attorney Tim Johnson announced the plea by the 45-year-old Gondrezick on Friday. The former Houston resident faces up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and more $1 million in restitution for conspiring to commit wire fraud.
Supported The chairman of the U.S. Olympic Committee says acting CEO Stephanie Streeter is doing a “terrific” job and deserves her pay package, which could be worth more than $1 million a year. The USOC board recently approved a $560,000 base salary for Streeter and is negotiating a bonus package that could bring the total salary to seven figures if she meets a number of goals. Former CEO Jim Scherr made $619,507 in 2008, with a base salary of $428,243. Chairman Larry Probst, who signed off on the salary, said Saturday that Streeter’s salary was appropriate for her position.
Born Olympic champion skier Picabo Street has given birth to her second child, a boy. Dax Meyer Street Reeser was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Aug. 3, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced. The American was the super G gold medalist at the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
Sidelined Georgia Tech backup quarterback Jaybo Shaw will miss at least the start of the season after breaking a collarbone during scrimmage. Head coach Paul Johnson said Shaw is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
