In brief: Tags to go on sale for Idaho wolf hunt

Idaho Fish and Game will start selling wolf tags at 10 a.m. Monday.

Hunting tags cost $11.50 for Idaho residents and $186 for nonresidents. A tag is good for one wolf, which may be taken in any one of the 12 wolf hunt zones in Idaho.

Tags are available at Fish and Game offices, through license vendors, by telephone at (800) 554-8685, or online at https://id.outdoorcentral.us/. A valid 2009 Idaho hunting license is needed to purchase a tag.

If the wolf hunt is stopped through legal action before Sept. 1, hunters who purchased a tag can get a refund. If the season is blocked on or before Oct. 9, hunters who can show in good faith they did not hunt may be eligible for a refund.

Earlier this week, environmental groups filed a request for an injunction in U.S. District Court in Montana to halt fall wolf hunts in Idaho and Montana.

Police seek vehicle in drive-by shooting

Spokane police investigating a drive-by shooting early Wednesday are looking for a 1990s Chevrolet Tahoe or similar SUV.

A man was driving the vehicle when shots were fired from it in the 2100 block of West Maxwell Avenue about 2:30 a.m., Spokane police said. A man in his 20s was shot in the stomach, police said.

The SUV drove north on Belt from Maxwell, witnesses told police.

The victim and his friends had been drinking in the area and said they didn’t know why someone would shoot at them. Police have determined the victim is not associated with a gang, according to a news release.

Anyone with information can call Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.

Two men arrested in storage burglary

A team effort by Spokane County sheriff’s deputies and watchful neighbors in Rockford resulted in the arrests of two Spokane men on burglary charges.

Christopher J. Cannata, 37, and Joseph A. Gariepy, 38, were booked into Spokane County Jail in connection with the break-in at a storage unit in Rockford about 12:45 a.m. Friday.

Deputies said residents living near the storage facility saw the burglary occurring and notified the Sheriff’s Office with descriptions of the men and their vehicle.

One deputy saw a vehicle matching the description pass him northbound on state Highway 27 while he was headed to the burglary call. Other deputies set up “stop sticks” on the highway at 32nd Avenue, which disabled one of the front tires of the suspects’ vehicle. The driver stopped. Deputies said they found items taken in the burglary in the vehicle along with a bolt cutter.
