Just enforce traffic laws

Spokane Valley Councilman Dick Denenny is blaming erratic driving on the wrong drivers (Valley Voice, July 18).

The people who constantly drive 5 mph or more over the speed limit because it is acceptable are the problem, especially on two-lane rural highways. They bully drivers who are driving at the limit, and then get into trouble by passing irresponsibly to get back their 5 plus mph.

The limit seems to be a suggestion, even in the posted construction areas of I-90. There doesn’t seem to be any serious amount of police action enforcing basic speed limit adherence. I watch speeders, shuck-and-jiving drivers, and others daily get away with terrible driving behavior while enforcers don’t take action.

Dawdlers may slow drivers down and create driving tension; however, good driving skills don’t disappear at the sign of a driving dilemma. I would argue good/excellent drivers know when and how to pass no matter the situation, and have heightened senses when the situation demands caution. The laws on the books already cover speeders and slow-moving vehicles.

It would be refreshing if law enforcers, and the courts which uphold the law, ticket and prosecute those who consistently drive over the speed limit. Those who have inaccurate speedometers should be issued a defective equipment ticket. Please just enforce current laws.
