Club meets on River Queen

POST FALLS – The Compass Club will have its September luncheon aboard the River Queen from Templin’s Resort, 414 First Ave. in Post Falls, on Sept. 1. Boarding will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Tickets are $35 per person.

Fair begins Wednesday

COEUR D’ALENE – The North Idaho Fair and Rodeo will be at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, 4060 Government Way, Wednesday through Aug. 31. Exhibit buildings are open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The five-day event, themed “It’s A Big Deal,” will include entertainment, exhibits, carnival rides and more. Arena events include Draft Horse Show and Pull, Motocross, PRCA Rodeo, and Demolition Derby.

Cost is $8 per person 13 and older; $7 for seniors 60 and older; $4 for kids 6-12; free for children 5 and under. Advanced ticket sales and special daily admission discounts will be available. Parking is $3.

Nominees sought in arts

COEUR D’ALENE – The Arts Commission of Coeur d’Alene is seeking nominations for the 14th annual Mayor’s Awards in the Arts.

Nominees may be businesses, organizations, or individuals who have made a significant contribution to the arts in Coeur d’Alene. Current commissioners and their family members, along with staff and committee chairpersons for the commission, are not eligible.

Award categories are: Excellence in the Arts, Support of the Arts, and Arts in Education. Excellence nominees will be evaluated on community participation in the arts; scope of the artist’s audience; awards and recognition the artist has previously received; and the quality and/or originality of work. Support nominees will be evaluated on years of commitment to support of the arts in Coeur d’Alene; the overall involvement in support of the arts; and the type of support, including volunteer service on boards, lectures, or financial. Arts in Education nominees will be evaluated on years of commitment to arts education; degrees of advocacy for arts education in the schools and community; and the overall impact on making the arts a vital part of the basic curriculum.

Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 11. The Mayor’s Awards in the Arts will be held Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.

Child car safety help sought

COEUR D’ALENE – Sarah Nielsen, an instructor for Safe Kids Kootenai County, is looking for volunteers to help her train families in proper child passenger safety.

Volunteers would need to become certified and could do so at a child passenger safety technician certification course held Sept. 9 through Sept. 12 at the Post Falls Health Park, 1300 E. Mullan Ave. in Post Falls, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost for the course is $60 and would be reimbursed for volunteers who participate at Safe Kids car seat events.
