Newer Rogers reopens

Spokane Public Schools will host a reopening and dedication of Rogers High School, 1622 E. Wellesley Ave., on Sept. 12 at the newly renovated high school. The ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Self-guided tours will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. Additional events include a community picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the official dedication ceremony is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. An alumni and community reception will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Space Camp

Dave Gamon, a science teacher at Northwood Middle School, recently attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. Gamon also is a Washington state regional Teacher of the Year.

Space Camp is one of the many opportunities the Teacher of the Year program provides to teachers with “cutting edge technology.” Through the National Teacher of the Year program, the SMARTer Kids Foundation provides every state honoree with a technology package valued at more than $15,000, according to a press release provided the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Teachers are also awarded a $10,000 Ralph Saxton and Jim Bradley Scholarship for classroom improvements.

Schools renovated

Spokane students and teachers head back to school today, and students and teachers at Garfield and Longfellow elementary schools will return to completed roofing, insulation, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning projects.

Contractors, custodians and the Spokane Public Schools capital projects staff have been working all summer to complete the project on the two elementary schools. Because school starts earlier this year, the summer work period was shortened by two weeks.

The Garfield and Longfellow projects were funded by the voter-approved 2009 facility improvement bond.
