In brief: North Carolina holds off Michigan State

NCAA men’s basketball: Ed Davis scored a career-high 22 points Tuesday night to help No. 10 North Carolina beat No. 9 Michigan State 89-82 at Chapel Hill, N.C., in a rematch of last season’s national championship game won by the Tar Heels.

Larry Drew II had a career-best 18 points for North Carolina (7-1), which led most of the game before having to hold off a rally in the final minutes. North Carolina shot 58 percent and led by as many as 19 points early in the second half, beating Michigan State (5-2) for the second straight year in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Raymar Morgan scored 18 points to lead the Spartans, who were 2 of 20 from 3-point range.

No. 4 Purdue upends Wake Forest: E’Twaun Moore scored 22 points to help No. 4 Purdue beat Wake Forest 69-58 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at West Lafayette, Ind.

JaJuan Johnson had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Boilermakers (6-0), who are enjoying their highest AP ranking since 1996.

C.J. Harris and Ishmael Smith each scored 14 points for the Demon Deacons (4-2).

No. 6 Tennessee dominates GW

NCAA Women’s Basketball: Alyssia Brewer scored a career-high 23 points, Glory Johnson had 16 points and 12 rebounds and No. 6 Tennessee beat George Washington 93-53 at Knoxville, Tenn.

Angie Bjorkland (University High) scored nine points for Tennessee.

Beasley leads Heat past Trail Blazers

NBA: Michael Beasley scored a season-high 27 points, Dwyane Wade had 18 points and 12 assists and the Miami Heat led from the start in beating the Portland Trail Blazers 107-100 in Portland.

Portland lost its third consecutive game. The Blazers were playing without forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who has a right knee contusion.

Greg Oden grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds and scored 13 points to lead Portland.

76ers in talks with Iverson: Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers are closer to a reunion. A person with knowledge of the contract talks said the Sixers offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to Iverson.

Teams decline arbitration to stars

Baseball: New York Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon, Houston shortstop Miguel Tejada and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Randy Wolf were among the free agents who weren’t offered salary arbitration by Tuesday night’s deadline, moves that enable new teams to sign them without losing draft picks.

Other Type A players under the free-agent rankings who did not receive arbitration offers included Dodgers second baseman Orlando Hudson; San Francisco catcher Bengie Molina; Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye and reliever Octavio Dotel; Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco; Los Angeles Angels pitcher Darren Oliver; Houston pitcher LaTroy Hawkins; Minnesota shortstop Orlando Cabrera; and Chicago Cubs pitcher Kevin Gregg.

Just 23 players received arbitration offers and only 10 were position players: St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday and third baseman Mark DeRosa; Boston outfielder Jason Bay; Los Angeles Angels third baseman Chone Figgins; Seattle third baseman Adrian Beltre; Tampa Bay catcher Gregg Zaun; Texas catcher Ivan Rodriguez and outfielder Marlon Byrd; and Toronto catcher Rod Barajas and shortstop Marco Scutaro.

Roethlisberger expected to play

Football: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has worked out without problems since missing Sunday night’s game in Baltimore with a concussion and is expected to play Sunday against Oakland.

Roethlisberger was held out of the 20-17 overtime loss to the Ravens after having postpractice headaches.

SMU to play in Hawaii Bowl: SMU is headed to its first bowl game in 25 years. The Mustangs announced their Hawaii Bowl berth.

It’s the first bowl for SMU since the Aloha Bowl in 1984.

Chicago wins after 11 shootout rounds

Hockey: Brent Seabrook scored in the 11th round of a shootout and the Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 in Chicago, to give coach Joel Quenneville his 500th career victory.

Molson family buys Canadiens: The sale of the Montreal Canadiens was approved, days before the storied team’s 100th anniversary.

The Molson family won approval from the NHL board of governors, becoming the fourth group of Molsons to own the club since the 1950s.
