Church hosts nativities exhibit

The Spokane Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1620 E. 29th Ave., will present the 2009 Community Nativities Exhibit today through Monday. The exhibit will be open from 3-9 p.m. on weekdays and from noon-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibit features more than 700 Christmas nativities from 26 countries. Some of the nativities are extremely small – you’ll need a magnifying glass to see them – and some have more than 800 figures.

There will also be nightly musical performances: the Pilgrim Slavic Baptist Orchestra today at 6:30 and 8 p.m.; the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus Elementary Choir on Friday at 6:30 and 8 p.m.; the Spokane Community Gospel Choir on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.; the Pages of Harmony and Spirit of Spokane barbershop musical extravaganza Saturday at 8 p.m.; the Concordia Choir of Spokane German-American Society on Sunday at 6:30 p.m.; a broadcast Christmas devotional Sunday at 7 p.m.; and the Ferris High School Canterbury Belles Choir on Monday at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Concerts

The Voiceless Choir will present its Fourth annual HeartSongs Concert on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at Covenant Christian Church, 5915 S. Regal St.

The choir is made up of homeless and formerly homeless families who gather to eat, sing and enjoy fellowship. Many of the songs they sing deal with their experiences with homelessness.

Tickets are $15.

First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N. Country Homes Blvd., will present “Hot Pipes on a Cold Evening,” a pipe organ concert, today at 7 p.m.

Organist John Ledwon will perform on the 1914 Wurlitzer Theatre pipe organ.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will present Kinderchoir of Spokane in concert Sunday at 2 p.m.

The choir will perform “Christmas in the Air.”

Advent events

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5810 S. Meadowlane Road, will offer Bible studies and potluck suppers every Wednesday during Advent at 5:30 p.m.

The church will also hold a bake sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Along with baked goods, items for sale will include Christmas decorations and crafts.

•Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., will offer Advent worship services Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m.

The theme of this Wednesday’s service is “The Christmas Language of Affirmation,” and anyone interested can arrive at 6 p.m. for a soup and bread supper.

Bodhi Day Celebration

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will host a Bodhi Day Celebration on Sunday.

The celebration will include an introduction to Buddhism that will discuss etiquette and history at 1 p.m., followed by a service at 3 p.m.

The Bodhi Day Service is a celebration of the Buddha’s Enlightenment.

Rev. Don Castro from the Seattle Temple will speak on the topic, “Lessons from the Elderly,” and will give a children’s talk.

Pictures with Santa

Summit Ridge Christian Fellowship will offer pictures with Santa on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the South Hill Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5607 S. Freya St.

The event will include hot cocoa and cookies. Pictures are $15 for a digital file or $20 for the digital file and a 5-by-7-inch photo.
