Sasquatch athletes earn several awards

Several Community Colleges of Spokane athletes received postseason honors from the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.

In women’s soccer, forward Tabitha Grow, midfielder Cori Jo Young, defenders Stephanie Hopkins and Maile Cobb and goalkeeper Claire Pflueger were all named to the East-West Region all-star team. CC Spokane’s Jim Martinson shared East co-coach of the year honors with Walla Walla’s Chad Bodnar. Columbia Basin striker Julissa Rodriguez was named the East Region MVP.

In men’s soccer, CC Spokane forward Andrew Mastronardi, midfielder Matt Miller, defenders Graham Lundgren and Tyler Florez and goalkeeper Ryan Skay were named to the all-star team. Kenny Krestian of CC Spokane was named coach of the year in the East Region. Alan Bosio of Treasure Valley was the East MVP.

In volleyball, CC Spokane’s Nicole Graybeal received first-team honors. Teammates Kasey Jurich and Beth Altena earned second-team honors.

Football

Washington State University defensive back Brandon Jones was arrested by Pullman police Monday afternoon and charged with assault in the fourth degree domestic violence, according to a police report.

Jones, 22, started all 12 games this year at cornerback after transferring from California and sitting out last season. The junior has been suspended from all team activities pending further investigation by the coaching staff, WSU sports information director Bill Stevens said.

Fourth-degree assault is a gross misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Volleyball

The Lewis-Clark State Warriors couldn’t sustain their hot start Wednesday and fell to College of Idaho at the NAIA volleyball tournament in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Warriors won the opening set 25-21, before losing the next three 25-10, 25-18, 25-20.

The loss drops LCSC to 0-2 in pool play and likely eliminates the Warriors from advancing to the bracket portion of the tournament.

Girls basketball

Sydney Butler hit 9 of 11 free throws on her way to a game-high 27 points and the Lake City Timberwolves (5-1) jumped out to a big early lead and held off the Ferris Saxons 55-46 in non-league play at Ferris.

Kiara King scored 15 to lead the Saxons in their season opener. Haley Sieverding added 12 points, while Katara Belton-Sharp scored nine with a game-high 14 rebounds.

In other non-league action, Kayla McKinney and Rachel Peters combined to score 21 points and the Oroville Hornets hit 21 of 25 free throws en route to a 43-39 victory over the visiting Republic Tigers. Tori Orestad scored 12 points to pace Republic in its season opener. The Tigers were 5 of 12 at the free-throw line. … Cassie Thompson scored a game-high 18 points and Caitlyn Nichols scored 15 to power the Timberlake Tigers (5-0) to a 55-10 road victory over the Wallace Miners (1-3). Courtney Jennings led Wallace with three points. Timberlake led 17-0 after the first period.
