Control mania on the right

The Spokesman-Review

It’s interesting when syndicated columnist Cal Thomas pops out from alternative reality to entertain. He speaks of the leftist revolution destroying all the good work done by 30-plus years of conservative dominance. A decimated middle class and wealth redistribution to the top being some of their handiwork. He states, “liberal Democrats realizing their decades-old dream of complete control of our lives.” The guy is truly amazing.

Let’s look back to the 20th century to see who tends to really intrude into our lives. Prohibition, a direct bid to control the habits of individuals, Republicans. The Great Depression, Herbert Hoover, a Republican. The highly successful war on drugs, Richard Nixon, a Republican. Fights against unions, 40-hour work week, Social Security, Medicare, etc., Republicans.

Small government equals monopolistic corporations, suppressed wages and huge deficits, usually kept off the books. Firebrand conservatives like to use government as a club to beat anyone who disagrees with them. The blurring of religion and state, which includes attempts to legislate from religious dogma, brought by conservative Republicans.

You get the picture. Liberals generally aren’t control freaks. I resent Cal’s blatant attempts to polarize us. We won’t get our government back throwing rocks at one another.
