Jarvis named elementary P.E. teacher of the year
Greenacres Elementary teacher P.J. Jarvis has been named the Washington State Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Washington Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, the state chapter of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Jarvis is now a candidate for the district teacher of the year representing the Northwest District, one of six in the country. She has been teaching health and fitness at Greenacres for seven years and is also the school’s Associated Student Body adviser. She also organized a Jump Rope for Heart event at the school in 2008.
The award was granted based on five criteria: conducting a quality K-12 physical education program; utilizing various methodologies and planning innovative learning experiences; serving as a positive role model in the areas of health and fitness; participating in professional development opportunities; and providing service to the profession through leadership, presentations and/or writing.
School board recognized
The West Valley board of directors has been named a 2009 School Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors’ Association. The board is one of eight in the state to receive the honor. All eight recipients rated more than 80 points out of a possible 100 and all received the award.
Applicants were required to submit an essay and evidence to demonstrate how they are putting the new Washington state school board standards into practice, including creating conditions districtwide for student and staff success and holding the district accountable to meeting student learning expectations.
The members of the West Valley board are Robert Dompier, Debbie Hjortedal, Pamela McLeod, Robert Wentworth and James Williams.
Craft fairs
• The East Valley High School Band is hosting the annual Winter Craft Fair today and Sunday at the school, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave. More than 70 local vendors will be there, as will Santa Claus. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Admission is $1.
Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
• Seth Woodard Elementary will have its craft fair today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the school, 7401 E. Mission Ave. The sale benefits the ASB, which helps pay for student activities. Admission is a can of food for the food bank.
