Hired Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong is headed to Louisville to be the Cardinals’ head coach. Louisville hired Strong on Wednesday, signing him to a five-year contract that will pay him a base salary of $1.6 million a year.

•Pittsburg State has named Tim Beck as head football coach to replace Chuck Broyles, who retired following his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving. Beck is a longtime assistant to Broyles, including 16 years as offensive coordinator.

Fined The NFL has docked Dallas Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams $50,000 for shoving New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck in the back.

Announced New England quarterback Tom Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen have welcomed a baby boy. Brady said the boy was born Tuesday and that he and Bundchen had not chosen a name.

•Top international jockey Mick Kinane, 50, has announced his retirement following a 35-year career in which he won many of horse racing’s glamour events, including the 1990 Belmont Stakes.

Rewarded With the Texas Longhorns playing for their second BCS national football championship in five years, school officials agreed to raise coach Mack Brown’s annual salary from $3 million to $5 million.

Awarded Unbeaten TCU’s Jerry Hughes has won the Ted Hendricks defensive end of the year award. Hughes had 54 tackles and 111/2 sacks.

Died Former Colorado State football and track star Alex Burl Jr., 78, who played a season in the NFL, died of a heart attack in Denver.

Charged Authorities in East Lansing, Mich., charged nine Michigan State football players with misdemeanor assault and conspiracy following a Nov. 22 dormitory brawl. Coach Mark Dantonio has suspended 11 players and dismissed RB Glenn Winston and DB Roderick Jenrette, both of whom were charged.
