Ed Schaefer of Coeur d’Alene showed his support for Sarah Palin in the early morning hours of Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009. He was in line to get his book signed at Fred Meyer in Coeur d’Alene.
(Full-size photo)(All photos)

Krista Woodruff arrived at the Coeur d’Alene Fred Meyer store on Wednesday night to wait for a chance to have Sarah Palin autograph her copy of Palin’s memoir, “Going Rogue: An American Life.”

Woodruff left Palin’s table Thursday afternoon with tears streaming down her face.

“I’m so awed I can hardly put it in words,” said Woodruff, who lives in Spokane.

Many of the estimated 900 people who spent hours in bitter cold for their chance to see Palin, former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate, declared the experience worth the wait.

“You feel that she’s genuine, 100 percent, real-to-the-core,” Woodruff said. “I told her we would do anything we could for her and there are five people in my household that would be voting for her.”

But Palin was mum on whether she plans a 2012 presidential campaign – clearly the hope of many people attending the book signing. She did not grant interviews to journalists, only allowing photographers and videographers close enough to capture images.

The stops at the Coeur d’Alene Fred Meyer from noon to 3 p.m. and at the Sandpoint Business and Events Center Thursday night were the latest in Palin’s cross-country book tour. Each stop has drawn hordes of people, waiting in line for hours to have their books signed.

“I actually started cruising the parking lot at 7 a.m. (Wednesday),” said Tom Howard, 53, of Athol. “My hope is that she’ll run in 2012 for president. I’m going to tell her I’d love to see a Palin-Ron Paul ticket. I know that’s not real popular, but I’m still going to ask her.”

Palin was born in Sandpoint but moved with her family to Alaska as an infant. She attended North Idaho College briefly and graduated from the University of Idaho. On Wednesday night, she stayed at the Coeur d’Alene Resort with her mother and father, Chuck and Sally Heath, husband, Todd, and son, Trig, Sally Heath said. Other friends also traveled with the family and were watching Trig on Thursday, she said.

Palin signed books at Fred Meyer until everyone in line had her autograph. “She stayed until 3:30 and got everybody through,” said Melinda Merrill, a Fred Meyer spokeswoman, who estimated the crowd at 900 people. The store provided free coffee and doughnuts beside the stacks of “Going Rogue,” on sale for $17.39.

The first person in line, Mary Ann Porter of Spokane, showed up at 10 a.m. Wednesday and eventually was joined by hundreds who camped overnight in the store’s outdoor garden center. The evening took on a party atmosphere, with strangers going in on pizzas together and watching each other’s belongings during warm-up breaks. Ages ranged from senior citizens to children as the crowd bundled in down parkas, heavy boots and sleeping bags. Shotzy’s coffee shop next door stayed open all night, offering Palin-themed specials like the “Alaskan Mudslide” and “Roca Rogue Latte.”

Others, like Susan Sunderland, of Hayden, showed up Thursday morning, hoping it wouldn’t be too late. Arriving at 8:45 a.m., Sunderland secured spot No. 564 in line, with the first 700 guaranteed an autograph. “I watched it on the news this morning,” Sunderland said around 11 a.m. Thursday. “I didn’t expect to get on line.”

But she did and had two books signed, one for her and one for a co-worker.

Outside the book-signing area, where Palin and her husband signed books, Sally Heath greeted and hugged patrons in a purple blazer adorned with a pin designed to look like a Vogue magazine cover, except it said ROGUE and “The Freedom Issue,” with her daughter’s picture. Heath said she and her husband try to visit North Idaho every couple of years to see friends. Katie Ebbesen, 26, said she strategically planned a business trip from Seattle to Spokane so she could attend the book signing.

“I like that she’s fiscally conservative and she doesn’t spend money that she doesn’t have,” said Ebbesen, who also stayed at the resort and was able to greet Palin there Wednesday night as well. “I think she’s redefined the role of women in society. I like that she not only is a mom and works but is a real leader. I think that’s awesome.”

Oh, yes, Sarah…please, please run in 2012. A Palin/Gingrich ticket would certainly give us the BEST the GOP has to offer.

What fun that would be to watch. Especially listening to her analysis of complex issues when the script isn’t handed to her.

And if the Republicans won’t have her, I hope she runs on the Tea Baggers Party.

  • SugarShane on December 11 at 7:55 a.m.

Maybe the Mayans were on to something with that whole end of the world in 2012.

  • Marksman on December 11 at 7:55 a.m.

Sarah is a much better Public Speaker than the Kenyan, who can’t seem to finish a sentence without a few well placed uh’s, uhm’s and aahh’s; none of which make him appear articulate, confident or Presidential! BTW she is also a lot more photogenic than your Chicago metrosexual! 2010, Congress! 2012, Tea in the White House!

Third paragraph, third word. You misspelled “odd”.

“’…she doesn’t spend money that she doesn’t have,’ said Ebbeson, ”

Then why was she over 500,000 in debt when before and after the 2008 campaign? This is an obvious slash at the Obama administration, but it can’t be backed.

  • soccermomsusie on December 11 at 8:39 a.m.

I love Sarah! I think she gets a bum rap for not knowing facts. Knowledge is over rated.

So what if she is not very intelligent? Neither are we. What better person to have as our president? Remember how things were so much better when President Bush was in office? He was no scholar and it was great. Now we have a smart guy, a guy who has “experience,” “tact,” and a “work ethic,” and our whole country is turning communist. That’s really great isn’t it?

Give me a dumb person that makes me feel good any day! I like the idea that our president is a person who is just like me, just as smart (not more smart) as me. I see a lot of people on reality shows that remind me of $arah. I hope they run for office too.

Besides, Obama writes his own speeches so we can blame him for what he says. Sarah’s book and her speeches are written by someone else. She is just reading what they told her to read. Don’t blame her!

    HEAR OUR VOICE!

Pity the poor Lib-tards; their Great Black Hope is going down in flames of egotistical obtuseness while his policies collapse around him. If Barry is the best and brightest this generation has to offer…God help us all!

  • Marksman on December 11 at 9:49 a.m.

Memo to Don Bumpus. The spelling and usage are correct. You have confused odd with awed. Wish I could say the same about your post!

  • Megan_B on December 11 at 10:03 a.m.

Marksman: Don was making a pun. Perhaps that is too abstract for your limited thinking.

Name calling is rude and doesn’t prove any point you wish to make. It only looks like something you have to resort to since actual facts aren’t present in your conclusions.

If you were willing to do much more reading, research, and in-depth analysis, you would have probably voted differently. The problem of certain politicians taking advantage of the uneducated for their own political gain is very real, and can get very scary.

If you’re against President Obama’s political polities and legislation ideas, fine. If you’re against him because your radical extremist church is telling you that he is the Anti-Christ, and you are blindly following without doing any research of your own, then I pity you.

  • soccermomsusie on December 11 at 10:19 a.m.

Marksman, you are obviously a very smart guy. You remind me of my friend Rifleman Dud. I hope you keep telling it like it is to everyone you know.

Lib-tards! Priceless. How did you come up with that one? I would like to see that on a t-shirt.

I know that some say that the more people like us say the stuff that we do, the smaller the GOP base gets, that we scare people away.

Well, I for one think that is to try to get us to shut up. We won’t stop!

    HEAR OUR VOICE!!

I can’t believe that some people think that Obama is a better president than a potential President Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Montgomery Burns, Shawn Manatee or Bill Oreilly.

I haven’t seen Barry O’Kenyan (you can use that if you want) blame somebody else, quit midterm, weep and giggle at the same time, abuse alcohol/drugs or misuse a lufa sponge. Loser. That is why we Republicans are the best - we have all our bases covered. It’s a big tent.

  • maria on December 11 at 10:28 a.m.

My neighbor drove his Mavericky all the way from Lewiston to see her.

  • Marksman on December 11 at 10:44 a.m.

Megan_B will you also be chastising Scoutster for name calling? Or is that reserved for us unwashed, uneducated, rubes who vote conservative? Your assumptions and dispersions on my cognitive abilities speak to the deficiencies in your own cognitive processes.
You seem to have done a fair amount of name calling in your post. You refer to me as uneducated and a limited thinker as well as being a member of a radical fringe group church.

I resent your smarmy implication that my lack of confidence in BHO is somehow based on a “radical extremist” church point of view. What are you saying Megan, I am a Racist? Just because I disagree with your fellow Lib-tards? As for name calling, couching it in big words does not change the premise!

You should take your own advice my dear and do some more research. Finally a question; what is a politie?(sic)

  • Marksman on December 11 at 10:49 a.m.

Soccer Mom Susie; nice try. You haven’t seen Barry O’Kenyan blame George W Bush for every problem the Great Black Hope has run into since becoming POTUS? Its like Newt Gingrich said a long time ago; Don’t come to the discussion unprepared!

  • shanusmaximus on December 11 at 11:04 a.m.

Tea Party movement is being hijacked by Republican wonks.

    http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/tea_parties_perry_sanford/2009/05/14/214426.html

Just remember folks that the Republicans are just as responsible for this mess we are in. You can’t keep this stupid pro-wrestling game going. One gang in, one gang out. They all like spending our money the same. Frankly, I do not see what you people see in Palin outside of a cheerleader position. Sure she is hot as Hades, but is this not the same type of thinking that got Barry in? Not really concerned about substance, but about celebrity and image. Why are you running to this woman when you have a person like Ron Paul who has been walking the walk and talking the talk FOR YEARS!! Not only that…he has been right time after time. Sure he isn’t pretty or new, but damnit, he is tried, true, dedicated and experienced.
Palin is a red herring…..she was used during the election and I think she is being used currently.
At best she would be qualified to be Sec. of the Interior. Stop the celebrity worship and REALLY look at what she has done that would make you follow her….into the void.

  • Scoutster on December 11 at 11:57 a.m.

    Marksman…

What name calling did I commit?

I do agree with Shanus that Ron Paul is a much more thoughtful and considered advocate for a legitimate point of view re: government’s rightful place in our society. It’s a shame people jump right to trying to PROVE their righteousness instead of opening themselves up to the possibility that there might be another point of view.

For example, how DO we pay for entitlement programs that are going to bankrupt us? Do we tax, or do we cut. The GOP plan for 8 years was to simply offer tax cuts and “grow our way out of the deficit”. How’s that workin’ for us? (And BTW, why do people blame Obama for the deficit…he inherited it, he didn’t create it.) The Dems are forced now to clean up this mess, but they, too, are not being honest about the true long-term cost or a genuine method for getting us out. Nobody wants to take the hit.

Palin cannot be taken seriously, because she has no serious solutions to serious problems. Ron Paul does. (I don’t necessarily agree with him, but his arguments are cogent and intelligent.)

  • empyrius on December 11 at 12:20 p.m.

Finally a voice of reason around here! Excellent shanusmaximus! Since Americans apparently have not the love to be Christian “Marxists”, you know, like that dude, our Savior, named Jesus, I have to go for a Christian family man, a doctor, even though he is totally dedicated to the “free”-market: Ron Paul for POTUS!

Now I have to pick on SMS a little b/c she is just so cute . . .

What is this “HEAR OUR VOICE” soccermom? Are you oppressed? Has “the man” been beating you down? Or is your old man still beating you up? I’ll rough that evildoer up for you if that is the case; I don’t like seeing our American women being oppressed by the government, by their old man, or by whatever spiritual/mental demons they may have!

Jesus is the way young lady; hear his voice, read his Word, allow the Spirit to assuage thy tormented soul . . .

    :)

  • shanusmaximus on December 11 at 1:20 p.m.

    @Scoutster

“(And BTW, why do people blame Obama for the deficit…he inherited it, he didn’t create it.) The Dems are forced now to clean up this mess, but they, too, are not being honest about the true long-term cost or a genuine method for getting us out.”

Oh he is just as much to blame. Bush got us into a trillion dollar debt and Obama thought…”Gee, that just wasn’t enough.” Think about it like this. Say you have a credit card with a $500 dollar limit. You spend the 500, but have no way to pay for it. So do you then transfer your 500 dollar debt onto another card that has $1500 dollar limit then spend the other $1000? The only difference is that our government says that they will get that money back twofold. Even if that were true, they still just can’t help themselves but spend it instead of paying down debt.

“For example, how DO we pay for entitlement programs that are going to bankrupt us? Do we tax, or do we cut. The GOP plan for 8 years was to simply offer tax cuts and “grow our way out of the deficit”. How’s that workin’ for us?”

Have you ever thought that neither side really wants a successful America? Have you ever thought when you look at these scumbag politicians, “Are you doing this on purpose?” Well there actually is a strategy that has been around since 1966…The Cloward/Piven plan…

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/02/the_clowardpiven_strategy_of_e.html

Don’t be fooled by “Republicans” like Gingrich, Bush et al. They are not political conservatives in the least. Triangulation and misdirection is the way that they play the game.

  • Marksman on December 11 at 2:52 p.m.

    Scoutster,
Last time I heard; “teabagger” is considered a slur. You’ll have to google its meaning yourself.

  • empyrius on December 11 at 7:45 p.m.

Interesting articles shanumaximus, yet, we have several problems with this theory:

    * Nationalism: Most, if not virtually all, of America’s poor have bought into the “we are America and everybody else must submit” brainwashing that all U.S. citizens have been subject to, well, since the very day of our births. It is only some far left-wing intellectuals and far right-wing extremists that truly believe the American government should be overthrown (the former advocating non-violent insurrection while the latter, of course, advocate armed rebellion, for the most part). The mainstream proletarian, that is, welfare susceptible class, is usually the most vocal proponents of a “war on terror” b/c their angst about life in general then has “the other” to blame.

    * The “war on drugs”: The United States has more people in prison than any country on this planet, and at least 75% (and I would say even higher than that), are in prison due to drug-related charges/crimes: if somebody robs you, put them in jail/prison, if somebody is consuming marijuana in their own home (or even growing in their gardens) then rest your neck! Which leads to . . .

    * War: The beer, if even O’Douls, drinking proletarians that happen to make it into the army then come back stateside, to guard other drug consumers . . .

    Too funny (but not really).

But, far more importantly, waging war on other nations allows the U.S. proletarian class to become warriors, much like the barbarians the Romans would enlist to fight for the “Roman way”: textbook.

    And . . .

Well, I am getting a little too buzzed now (off the dreaded alcohol), I will have to continue this at another time . . .

  • donandvin on December 11 at 9:15 p.m.

It appears as though you might be a bit off target, Marksman.

Not only was my little joke on words well above your head, but “teabagger” is in the running for an actual dictionary entry:
    http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/unfriend-named-new-oxford-american-dictionarys-2009-word-of-the-year-70201607.html

  • soccermomsusie on December 12 at 6:12 a.m.

Marxistman! You are right. Just because George W Bush drove the bus over the cliff, Obama still took the the driver’s seat during the plunge. Upon impact, anyone can see it was his fault. Thanks for that one. And thanks for invoking that moral icon Newt Gingrich. Now, I know you are truly a man of conviction!

  • Marksman on December 12 at 8:48 p.m.

RE: Teabaggers; in the dictionary or not its meaning is derogatory. What is with you Libs and the name calling? This is politics among adults, not some school yard “Oh yeah” contest.

  • Marksman on December 12 at 8:52 p.m.

Soccermommie SuzieQ, right back atcha! See previous post re: namecalling. When does the blaming Bush end with you Libs? Obama and the Dumbocrats in Congress spent more in ELEVEN months than George W. Bush spent in Eight years!

  • Marksman on December 12 at 8:54 p.m.

Don, got the joke the first time. My comments are as relevant then as now. Don’t give up the day job for stand up!

  • Marksman on December 12 at 9:07 p.m.

    BTW SoccermomsuzieQ;

Barack is a true Marxist. From his wealth re-distribution schemes to his bowing and scraping to some of the worlds most reprehensible Dictators/murderers. How many Cubans do you figure have died at Fidels hands now? How many Chinese have died because of Mao’s Communism? Marxism has killed more humans than any other political system ever devised.

  • Scoutster on December 13 at 9:46 a.m.

I’ve pretty well written off the whole dialog as a waste of time, but I couldn’t let this one pass…

    Marksman says:

And then the next post he refers to “Dumbocrats”.

    Excellent!

  • hawkeyegirl9 on December 13 at 11:31 a.m.

    Megan B –

Part of what you said is correct in that my comment was indeed a knock on the Obama administration. What I actually said was that Sarah “doesn’t spend money she doesn’t have, unlike the current administration.” Unfortunately the last half of my statement was left out of the article. Also, I should have specified that I was referring to her spending while she was in government in Alaska. (I suppose I should have used past tense!)

My statement, however, can be backed. During her time in government in Alaska, she cut back on spending wherever possible. Even when oil was expensive and the state of Alaska was bringing in a lot of money, she still cut back on spending to prepare for future times when the state might not be doing as well. Even Republicans were telling her to spend the money while she had it, but she refused to waste taxpayer dollars. She would go through the state budgets line-by-line and cut frivolous spending. She was always very aware of the fact that she was spending other peoples’ money, and she understands how serious it is to burden future generations with debt. Her book goes into a lot more detail on this – I’m sure you don’t want to buy a copy, but it’s worth a read if you can borrow one from someone.

  • soccermomsusie on December 14 at 8:14 a.m.

Yes, I am with you Marksmaam, Barry O’Kenyanmeyerski, (another one you can use!), bowing to a Japanese emperor! Call him Barry O’Kenyanmeyerski-toshiromifune.

I remember when our beloved Moral Leader Bush was in office and he would only hold hands with the Saudi King. They were equals in a world where there love would be seen as forbidden, yet they clasped and skipped - seemingly without a care.

I wonder if Lynn Cheney could pen another gay romance story about them?

I am a good Christian woman but there is something that excites me thinking about our W and the Saudi King. Kind of like Disney’s Alladin. Don’t even get me started about President Bush and Jeff Gannon. Sigh.

Anyway, I think you are a very smart guy and you should make sure you tell everyone what you think about Obama and why. Don’t hold back! We need more people like you carrying signs, posting bumper stickers and wearing t-shirts to convince everyone of the intelligence of your beliefs. It could really make a difference next election!

  • soccermomsusie on December 14 at 8:23 a.m.

Oh Marksman, I think you are wrong about Obama spending more in 11 months than Bush did in eight years. I’m not saying that because your math is wrong or that you just made that up, or that actually Obama hasn’t spent a drop in the bucket compared to Bush. I’m not even going to say anything about how Bush (beloved Moral Leader) kept the Iraq War off the books and how Barry O’Kenyan-etc. put the cost back in the books for all of us to see (what a killjoy).

I am just going to say that I heard President Obama spent one million times more on his first day of being president than President Bush did on his whole eight years plus President Reagan’s eight years - combined! I said it, so it’s true! It’s out there LibtardDemoncraps! Deal with that!!!

DON’T BLAME BELOVED MORAL LEADER BUSH!! HE JUST DID WHAT GOD (not Allah BTW) TOLD HIM TO DO!!

  • Amos_Annan on December 27 at 2:45 p.m.

It is unbelievable that anyone would consider voting for someone like this. She has demonstrated over and over again that she does not understand the world around her.

I didn’t think that after George Bush we could get anyone dumber. Sarah Palin makes even George Bush look good.

Shouldn’t people expect their leaders to have more intelligence and understanding?

Learning to memorize and repeat some Republican talking points is not a qualification for President.

We have a saying around here when something is really, really dumb: “That’s Sarah Palin dumb”.
