Trio lead CCS to tourney title

Community Colleges of Spokane won the Dale Bates Invitational in Eugene, Ore., defeating Umpqua 88-68 in the championship of the men’s basketball tournament Monday.

Spokane jumped out to a 15-4 lead and extended it to 51-34 at the half. Spokane led by as much as 26.

Griffon Jones and Zack Humphrey led the Sasquatch with 25 points each. Humphrey hit 7-of-8 3-pointers, and Jones added a team-high six rebounds. Kevin Bond scored all 14 of his points in the first 10 minutes for CCS.

Jones was named the tournament MVP and Bond was named to the all-tournament team.

Boys basketball

Davenport 70, Chewelah 57: The Gorillas (4-0), led by 39 points from the Gunnings, Joey (24) and Jarod (15), hit 10 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to help hold off the visiting Cougars (4-2) in the non-league game.

Sandpoint 63, Kellogg 53: Senior guard Stephen Buratto hit his average with 26 points to lead the Bulldogs (2-2) to the non-league win over the visiting Wildcats (2-4). Cody Lewis scored 22 for Kellogg.

Girls basketball

Kellogg 47, Sandpoint 29: The Wildcats (6-2) used strong rebounding in the fourth quarter, led by Hailey Fuller, to break open the close non-league game at Sandpoint (1-8).

Chelsea Morgan had 15 points and six boards and Kristen Viche 14 points and eight rebounds for Kellogg.

Davenport 35, Chewelah 31: Miranda Mielke hit two 3-pointers in a 17-point game that led the Gorillas (3-1) to a non-league home win over the Cougars (0-6).

St. Maries 34, Wallace 32: Tia Asbury’s two free throws with less than a minute to play gave the Lumberjacks (4-4) a five-point cushion and negated a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left by Courtney Jennings for the visiting Miners (3-8) in the non-league game. Jennings led all scorers with 15 points.

Postponement

Tonight’s scheduled District 9 North boys and girls games between Colton and St. John-Endicott have been postponed following the death of Colton teacher Glenn Voshell and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Gymnastics

Mead, led by the 2-3 all-around finish of Rachael Becker and Cadie Pratt, won a five-school Greater Spokane League meet at Shadle Park.

Becker, who tied for first on bars, and Pratt, the floor leader, led the Panthers to 165.15 points to 155.45 for runner-up University.

Shadle sophomore Alana Norman won all-around with 35.55, sharing first on bars and winning vault.
