Sports in brief: Iupati an AP first-teamer

College football: University of Idaho senior guard Mike Iupati added to his postseason honors by being selected to the Associated Press All-America first team on Tuesday as well as the team chosen by SI.com

Iupati, 6-foot-6 and 330 pounds, is the first Vandal to be named an AP All-American first-teamer since Idaho moved up to the FBS.

He has been chosen to five first-team All-America teams and was an Outland Trophy finalist.

Six players on the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, including Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, led the AP team.

Ingram was a unanimous choice, as was linebacker Rolando McClain. Defensive tackle Terrence Cody was voted to the team for the second straight season. Cornerback Javier Arenas, guard Michael Johnson and kicker Leigh Tiffin also were on the squad.

Stanford running back Toby Gerhart and Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh were also unanimous first-team All-Americans.

Texas’ Colt McCoy was the All-America quarterback, selected to the first team by a panel of 14 AP college football poll voters. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was second team.

College football: Eastern Washington University senior quarterback Matt Nichols and junior linebacker J.C. Sherritt have been chosen to the 25-man American Football Coaches Association FCS All-America team.

Also picked was Montana offensive lineman Levi Horn, a 6-7, 315-pound senior from Rogers High School.

Nichols is the only quarterback honored on the prestigious 25-person team selected by the nation’s head coaches.
