Whitworth University education students, dressed as “book fairies,” surprised the children at Whitman Elementary School last Thursday and read stories to them as part of a community outreach project.

According to a press release from the university, the project has been integrated into a Whitworth education course that is focused on reading and intended to promote literacy.

Whitworth associate professor of education Lisa Laurier teaches the class that conducts the project. Laurier serves on the board of Spokane Area Council for the International Reading Association. Whitworth senior education major Sophie Barron is the student coordinator for the community project.
