Roundup: Sherritt places second

Eastern Washington University linebacker J.C. Sherritt finished second in voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, awarded Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn., to James Madison defensive end Arthur Moats.

Sherritt received 17 first-place votes and 232 points for the award given to the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Moats, who led the nation in tackles for loss, earned 37 first-place votes and 342 points. The 110-vote margin of victory broke the record set last year by Eastern’s Greg Peach.

At the same banquet, Eastern quarterback Matt Nichols finished fourth in voting for the Walter Payton Award, given to the outstanding player in FCS.

Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards repeated as winner of the award, with 55 first-place votes and 431 points. Nichols earned 12 first-place votes and 188 points.

•Carroll College junior tight end Bubba Bartlett (Lakeland High, Rathdrum) was named an NAIA All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

Bartlett had 83 receptions for 932 yards and seven touchdowns for the Saints, who advanced to the NAIA semifinals.

•Central Washington senior linebacker Buddy Wood (Riverside High) was selected to the Little All-American third team.
