In brief: James leads Longhorns past Tar Heels

College basketball: Damion James led a four-man scoring frenzy that carried No. 2 Texas to a 103-90 victory over No. 10 North Carolina on Saturday in the first basketball game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

James and hefty center Dexter Pittman were forces around the basket for the Longhorns (10-0), with James posting 25 points and 15 rebounds, and Pittman compiling 23 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.

It was the most points the Tar Heels (8-3) have allowed in regulation since Roy Williams became their coach in 2003-04.

•Butler beats Xavier in final seconds: Gordon Hayward grabbed a loose ball and made a layup with 1.2 seconds left on the clock, giving No. 21 Butler (8-3) a 69-68 victory over Xavier (6-4) at Indianapolis.

The game then ended when officials ruled the clock had inadvertently stopped with about 14 seconds to go during the possession. The remaining time was run off, taking away the Musketeers’ last chance.

Southern Cal routs Tennessee: Alex Stepheson had 19 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, Mike Gerrity had 12 points and 10 assists, and Southern California (5-4) routed No. 9 Tennessee 77-55 for the Volunteers’ (8-2) worst loss under coach Bruce Pearl.

Old Dominion stuns Georgetown: Old Dominion spoiled Georgetown’s annual game at McDonough Arena again, capitalizing on 18 turnovers in a 61-57 win at Washington, handing the No. 11 Hoyas (8-1) their first loss of the season. Ben Finney had 13 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Monarchs (7-4).

Richmond rallies past Florida: Richmond rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit, and Kevin Anderson made four free throws in the final 5.4 seconds for a 56-53 win over the No. 13 Florida Gators (8-2) in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic at Sunrise, Fla. The Spiders (8-3) defeated a ranked team for the third straight season.

Wichita State stops Texas Tech: Clevin Hannah scored 24 points to spark Wichita State past No. 16 Texas Tech 85-83 at Wichita, Kan., giving the Red Raiders (9-1) their first loss of the season. J.T. Durley scored a career-high 20 points for the Shockers (10-1).

Fleury backstops Penguins to SO win

NHL: Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves and stopped three more tries in the shootout, and Kris Letang scored the only goal in the tiebreaker in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2-1 victory over the host Buffalo Sabres. The Penguins have won five straight and 11 of their last 14.

Predators topple Flames in third: Defenseman Cody Franson scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Nashville Predators beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 at Calgary, Alberta.

Howard, Lewis rally Magic past Blazers

NBA: Dwight Howard had 12 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks to help the Orlando Magic rally past the Portland Trail Blazers 92-83 at Orlando, Fla. Brandon Roy had 33 points and Andre Miller scored 16 for Portland.

•Ariza carries Rockets to win over Thunder: Trevor Ariza scored 31 points and hit five 3-pointers, and the Houston Rockets nearly blew a 17-point, third-quarter lead before holding on to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 95-90 at Houston.

Pavlik defends title with knockout win

Miscellany: Kelly Pavlik stopped Miguel Espino in the fifth round to defend his middleweight titles with a knockout victory at Youngstown, Ohio.

Valero retains title: Unbeaten Edwin Valero stopped veteran Hector Velazquez after six rounds in Caracas, Venezuela, to keep his WBC lightwelt title.

Penn State wins third straight volleyball title: At Tampa, Fla., Penn State (38-0) became the first program to win three straight volleyball titles, overcoming a two-set deficit to beat Texas 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-13 and extend its record winning streak to 102 straight games.

•Phelps helps U.S. team beat Europeans: Michael Phelps helped his American team trounce a group of European all-stars in the Duel in the Pool, anchoring a relay to one of the eight world records the U.S. set over the two-day meet at Manchester, England.

The U.S. team won 185-78 in the last major meet before the Jan. 1 ban on high-tech polyurethane swimsuits.

Osborne-Paradis wins Saslong downhill; Miller ninth: Manuel Osborne-Paradis of Canada won a World Cup downhill skiing event on the Saslong course at Val Gardena, Italy, while Bode Miller battled a sore ankle and headwinds to finish ninth.

Osborne-Paradis covered the 2.14-mile run in 2 minutes, 1.27 seconds for his second victory of the season.

•Bad weather cancels women’s World Cup downhill: Lindsey Vonn’s quest for a third consecutive downhill victory has been put on hold after bad weather forced organizers to cancel a World Cup ski race at Val D’Isere, France.

The race was rescheduled twice before being called off because of strong winds, poor visibility and snowfalls.

•Rams appear to be over swine flu: The St. Louis Rams appear to be over swine flu that hit the team earlier in the week.

Team spokesman Ted Crews said all players reported to a walkthrough. Thursday’s practice for the NFL team was canceled because of flu concerns.

•Lookin at Lucky takes Cashcall: Two-year-old Lookin at Lucky came back from his only loss in last month’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to win the $750,000 Cashcall Futurity horse race at Hollywood Park at Inglewood, Calif. The win gave trainer Bob Baffert his fourth victory of the day.
