Let majority choose

The Spokesman-Review

In response to “Socialism is a bad trade” (Letters, Dec. 12), I presume Mr. Don Graham refuses to accept both Medicare and Social Security as they are dreaded socialist programs “provided for the general welfare of the U.S.” (U.S. Constitution)

As for trading democracy for socialism, I believe democracy is the right of the voters to choose a government. That government can be whatever the majority want – capitalist, socialist, etc.

By Mr. Graham’s criteria for socialism, all the industrialized countries except the U.S. are not democracies and are “abject failures.” I’m sure they would be surprised to learn this.

Recalling progressive politicians and, I guess, replacing them with regressive ones, I presume before scheduled elections, seems rather undemocratic to me.
