Hired Cincinnati Bengals assistant Bob Surace has been hired as football coach at Princeton University, his alma mater. The center on Princeton’s 1989 Ivy League championship team, Surace replaces Roger Hughes, who was fired last month after 10 seasons at the school in New Jersey. Surace has been an assistant coach with Cincinnati for nine seasons, the last six as assistant offensive line coach.

Out The Arizona Cardinals have placed starting left tackle Mike Gandy on injured reserve after he underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia. The move ends the season for Gandy, who had started 31 consecutive games.

•Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd will require surgery to repair a groin injury, putting an end to the rookie’s sensational season. Byrd, who leads the NFL with nine interceptions, was placed on injured reserve, becoming the 18th Bills player this year to go on the season-ending list.

•University of Oregon wide receiver Jamere Holland has been ruled academically ineligible to play in the Rose Bowl, the school announced. The junior had 13 receptions for 199 yards and two touchdowns this season.

•New Jersey Devils defenseman Paul Martin will be sidelined another month after having a setback in his recovery from a broken left forearm. Martin broke his arm Oct. 24 when he was hit by a Bill Guerin shot in an NHL game at Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu didn’t practice again because of his injured left knee ligament and doesn’t expect to play Sunday against Baltimore.

Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce had fluid drained from his right knee and will miss the next two weeks.

Signed Los Angeles center Pau Gasol has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Lakers. The deal extends through the 2013-14 season, and could be worth more than $60 million depending on future salary caps.

Released The Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran wide receiver Mark Bradley, who dropped two passes in Sunday’s loss to Cleveland. His drops in Sunday’s game were among 10 by the Chiefs, who have been plagued throughout the season by an unreliable receiving corps. Also, the team said it planned to put tight end Brad Cottam on injured reserve with a fracture to a cervical vertebra.

Died One of Manchester United’s famed “Busby Babes,” Albert Scanlon, a survivor of the 1958 Munich air disaster, died. He was 74. Scanlon won the 1956 and 1957 league titles as an inside forward before the Feb. 6 crash killed eight of his United soccer teammates on the way back from a European Cup match in Belgrade. He retired in 1966.
