Pirates upend Boxers with balanced offense

Six Whitworth players reached double figures in scoring and the Pirates shot 64 percent from the floor in an 83-74 Northwest Conference basketball victory over the Pacific Boxers Saturday night at Forest Grove, Ore.

Ross Nakamura led the way with 16 points and five assists. Clay Gebbers scored 15, David Riley 14, Tim Sellereit 13, Nate Montgomery 12 and Calvin Jurich 11 for the Pirates (15-4, 7-3).

Gebbers’ effort was a career high. He scored 12 in the first half when Whitworth opened a 40-32 lead.

A Marcus Kienlen 3-pointer midway through the first half gave Pacific (8-10, 3-7) a 21-17 lead. But Gebbers sparked a 17-5 run for a 34-26 Whitworth advantage.

Ross Bartlett led Pacific with 16 points and nine rebounds. Garold Howe added 13 points, while Micah Mooney chipped in 12 points.

Pacific outrebounded the Pirates 29-21.

CC Spokane 76, Columbia Basin 66: Derek Gianukakis made 6 of 11 3-pointers on his way to 24 points and the Sasquatch claimed a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges victory over the Hawks at Spokane Falls Community College.

Damal Neil added 16 points and Griffin Jones 13 for CC Spokane (14-4, 6-1), while Kevin Cameron dished out 10 assists.

Andy Maxwell and Morgan Hyslop scored 16 apiece to lead Columbia Basin (11-6, 4-3).
